2014: The Do Good Year

Prior to 2012, I declared it the Year of the Rockstar.  I deemed 2013 as the Lucky Year.  For 2014, I’m calling it the Do Good Year. One of the best things that happened to me in 2013 was meeting Rob Greenfield and becoming friends with him.  He’s become a huge inspiration and I’m...

Riding Year-Round

I’ve talked in the past about how to deal with cycling in the rain, which is something I ride in often in Penang. Now that I’m in the states for the next month, I need to brush up on my winter riding, too. Here are some of my tips for tackling the mostly cold...

Would You Still Ride if You Were a Millionaire?

December 30, 2013

Of course you would still ride your bike…..but in this video I provide a little food for thought. I was hanging out at Port Louis and seeing those mega yachts down there got me to thinking about how life would be if it was me cruising on one of those beasts.  It was then...

#headtraining

For the past several years, I’ve participated in a winter training program run by a local Cat 1 racer. Twice a week cyclists of all levels gather and ride trainers: two hours on Saturday morning, 90 minutes on Wednesday evenings. The program runs from December through March, and people like me go and torture ourselves,...

Loving the BITE: Beet the Bloat Smoothie

Feeling stuffed in the midst of Holiday celebrations? I’ve got another antidote for you.  Last year I introduced a junk food anti-venom smoothie, and highlighted the power of celery to reduce water retention often brought on by too many sweets and salty foods. Often times, while some weight gain during the Holidays may be...

Back in the USA

After a couple of long flights and two days in Tokyo I am now back in the US until mid-January. Tokyo served as a nice re-introduction to reality, weather-wise, and I’m getting used to just feeling cold, all the time. Tokyo also had an interesting cycling culture, at least from what I saw while...

Beer, Benjamin Franklin, and Make it Happen

It’s a very simple quote, but one that conjures up a lot of good images…..especially when you find out that it was Benjamin Franklin who said it. I’m sure you all know who Ben Franklin is, but in case you need a refresher….he was one of North America’s greatest citizens.  He was a scientist,...

Logan Square

Logan Square

I wake early on Saturday. Instinctively I look toward the bottom of the bed for my dog – but he’s no longer there. Fully awake now, I head downstairs to pour coffee that has been timed to brew and is waiting for me. The aroma of freshly brewed beans fills my senses as I...

Take Your Cycling to the Next Level

It’s the perfect time to think about taking your cycling to the next level. Come on, I know you’re thinking about it.  Whether it’s your “off-season” or you’re in the middle of training hard, there’s no time like the present. You’ve been riding and riding, season after season, and just itching to do something a...

The A Ride

I just got my arse handed to me. It happens every Tuesday morning; I show up, hang with the guys as long as I can, get dropped, recover, catch up to someone who is hopefully a little faster than me so I can push myself and then finally meet up with the group at...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
