Cyclist: a Vehicle or Pedestrian?

It may sound like an odd question, but do you think non-cyclists think of us as a vehicle or pedestrian when we’re on our bikes? I never thought of it coming to these two options before moving to Grenada….a place where cyclists are totally thought of as a pedestrian.  A what?  How can you...

Loving the BITE: Stay Lean this Winter Tip #3

Stay Lean This Holiday Season I love a good party.  And, I love the Holidays. However, I will admit that I start playing a little defense during the 2 1/2 months that begin right before Halloween and end after New Year’s Day.  It’s during this time that overflowing candy bowls appear in all offices, that yummy...

That’s Ok.

That’s Ok.

I haven’t seriously ridden a bike in three weeks, and that’s ok. By seriously ridden I mean riding with the intention of getting a workout, and not just trying to survive. I rode on Sunday, but wasn’t feeling well so I made it 25 miles before calling it quits. I thought about riding during...

Ever heard of the Canadian band, Hedley?  Well, as a guy who feels he knows good music….I highly recommend you give these guys a listen. Yeah, I’m originally from Canada but that has absolutely no impact on why I think this band totally rocks.  First of all, they have been a musical hit machine for...

Loving the BITE: Rice is a Great Training Fuel

It only takes a little rice to deliver a lot of great riding fuel.  It’s an easy, whole-food, delicious, compact source of carbohydrates. And while rice has had quiet a resurgence among athletes with Dr. Allen Lim’s wonderful rice cakes, it’s been a favorite of many athletes around the world for years.  This week, we’ll explore...

Cycling Gear: Does Brand Matter?

It doesn’t matter what product you’re buying, there’s almost always a range of brands to choose from, going from budget to high-end. With some products, it’s incredibly important to stick with the trusted brands, and with others it’s barely more than a name. The question is: does it make a difference when you’re buying...

Life Happens While You’re Making Other Plans

In my opinion, this Lennon quote is the simplest and most accurate depiction of life ever put down in words. Yeah, we’re all so busy.  We all have a bunch of things on our mind and dreams we wish to fulfill…..but along the way life is happening each and every day. This is not...

Loving the (Children’s) Bike

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
