Cycling Grenada: My Toughest 60

When you live on a mountainous Caribbean island, the amount of route options is very limited.  On a daily basis, if I want to ride over 20 miles I either have to head up coast and do some pretty serious climbing or opt for monotonous loops. I don’t like either option, really……so most of...

The Missing Peace

It’s no secret that I haven’t been firing at the highest level the past couple years or so.  I haven’t even come close to consistently being the fun-loving, easy-going dude that I love to be.  But I’ve found the missing peace. A couple weeks ago, my nutritional friend Kelli wrote me a beautiful e-mail.  In that...

This week, we’re going to add in some advanced ingredients to take your pre-ride nutrition to the next level. I’ve mentioned each of them individual in past...

“I Own a Donkey”

I’ve talked about it a few times, but never dedicated a post entirely to our donkey, Moonlight Poet.  Yes, our family owns a donkey, and it’s definitely something worthy of a #MakeitHappen Monday post. People ask me all the time, why do you have a donkey?  Well, the quick answer is….why not?  A little...

I Still Do, #Livestrong

If all you’re concerned about is Lance Armstrong being a doping, lying, cheating cyclist…then you’re focused on the wrong story. It’s not your fault, really.  Our entire society revolves around the wrong story most of the time. Think about it for a second.  War and violence will always get 1000% more exposure than stories...

Loving the BITE: The Great Beta-Alanine Buffer

There’s a lot of hype out there. And, despite all the hype over specific amino acids, vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients that will truly impact your ride or performance in a way that is actually worth the cost and effort of it, there are really very few that will deliver on the promise. In...

How I Concentrate With Kids Around

March 16, 2015
By

My blogging buddy, Zoe from Grenada 40, suggested I put up something about how to write a post when your kids are around.  Seeing as 90% of the articles I put up were written with my kids within 3 feet of me, I figured I just might know something about this subject. Growing up,...

Oh, the Things I Say on my Bike

On a day to day basis, I’m really not a person who goes around swearing.  In fact, I rarely let the f-bombs fly.  But get me on a bike, and it’s like I’m an entirely different person. Yeah, the verbal smack down I give out would totally make your head spin.  If you haven’t...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
