I am officially “one of those people.” You know those people, the ones that immediately upload their ride data, before they’ve even taken off their helmet, to check their Strava segments to see if it was a PR or maybe, hopefully, a KOM. I’ve always loved looking at my ride data, trying to connect...

One More Reason to Love the Bike: No Ringing Phone

As a person who honestly cannot stand the sound of a ringing phone, being on my bike is one place where I get to escape it. Yeah, in this technological world where even that old lady crossing the street has a cell phone on her…..I continue to resist.  Our family owns one pay as...

Learning to Love the Bike Again

Two years ago my husband crashed on his (and mine) first mountain bike ride and broke his leg in a couple of places. After surgery, physical therapy and two years of letting the injury heal (and grow accustomed to the new hardware in his ankle) I finally convinced him to join me on a...

Please Stop Killing Cyclists

Update…upon posting this today, one of our readers wrote in and told me about one more to add to the list.  There were at least 3 cyclists killed in the United States in the past few days. I’m just one guy.  One person who isn’t passionate about too many things, but when I hear...

How Far Would You Go to Fit In?

How Far Would You Go to Fit In?

One of my favorite quotes of all time is: “The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves.  And you have to be strong enough to say, if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it.  Create your own.”    This is a quote by a man named Morrie Schwartz, a retired...

Look Who’s Loving the Bike: Facebook Edition

We love hearing about people’s cycling memories, and we often include those thoughts in something called “Look Who’s Loving the Bike“.  A couple of weeks ago there was a great discussion over at Cycling Shorts Facebook Page, and here is what some of the people had to say. I Love It.  If you’d like...

If For No Other Reason, This is Why You Should Respect Lance Armstrong

If For No Other Reason, This is Why You Should Respect Lance Armstrong

Okay, so he might have had a very large ego and took drugs along with pretty much all his competitors….but I still say all the good things Lance Armstrong did for cycling and cancer patients is more than enough to warrant respect. This is one of those topics where most people seem to have...

Learning to MTB

I’m not a mountain biker. I love coming up to someones wheel and sprinting around them, catching the draft in a paceline and carving corners on a quick descent, but all on pavement. I’ve dabbled in off-road bits before on my cross bike, but never anything too technical or challenging. Off-road for me is...

The Proactive Cyclist

Living in a country with a definite reactionary culture can be challenging…..especially when you’re a proactive type person. Yeah, I’m not perfect but I definitely lean towards the approach of doing things now to avoid having issues in the future.  It’s just how I’m wired and probably has something to do with being raised...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
