November 7, 2011

One of my favorite quotes of all time is: “The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves.  And you have to be strong enough to say, if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it.  Create your own.” This is a quote by a man named Morrie Schwartz, a retired college...

5 Tips to Avoid Feeling Sleepy After Exercise

Sleepiness in Athletes James’ Question: Is it usual to get really sleepy a couple of hours after a ride? I’ve recently started riding at the weekends (though I’m a long-time commuter and spinning fan). A typical example would be a two or three hour ride, in which I drink 500ml of energy drink, with...

Do you get flat tires on your bike and don’t know why? This week’s “Ask the Expert Bike Tech (and Professional Bicycle Fitter)” comes from Bill who asks: My son’s hybrid bike that he rides around campus is flatting on just about every ride.  It seems to be always flatting around the valve stem....

Make it Happen Monday: If I Knew…

October 31, 2011
By

If I knew I had exactly 25 years to live, I’d be intent on living them well. I’m sure many times during those years, I would lose sight of time. And slip into a regular routine. If I knew I had 10 years to live, initially I would be quite concerned. I would make...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
