Loving the BITE: Anti-Leg-Cramp Smoothie

Recently, a reader and a former client contacted me to ask how to reduce their leg cramps. One was experiencing cramps ride after ride once he hit the 30 mile mark, and another was experiencing them in the middle of the night after riding, and occasionally on a random evening. Neither are any fun.  But, it...

Loving the BITE: Fruit Strip Fuel

It’s no secret that I often shop outside the “sports nutrition” aisle when picking out training fuel.  Even if you don’t have the time or want to go for full-on homemade fuel, there are real food options for you. Loving the BITE: Souper Fuel for Cold-Weather Rides

Just last week, I received an email from a Loving the Bike reader who wanted to know my opinion on using soup for fuel during an upcoming 24 hour race. My opinion is…yum! As I sit typing, snow is falling outside. I woke up early this morning for an frigid uphill ski, and I’m...

Loving the BITE: The Great Oat and Intact Grains

You’ve heard of whole grains vs. refined grains. You’ve seen the food guide pyramid with grains at the base. And now, you’ve likely heard of completely grains-free eating from Paleo and eating philosophies. I’m often asked for my opinion on grains, so here it is. Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
