On Monday 3rd December, a very competent and competitive local cyclist , Christian Hill from Adalta Cycling Club, was hit by a taxi whilst cycling. He has suffered horrifying injuries due to the incident and is currently laying in a hospital bed looking at a long recovery period. Christian is a very keen cyclist...

Wet & Wild: Winter Riding

December is definitely here and I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s bloomin’ cold over her in the good old U of K. When I checked out LovingTheBike.com yesterday morning (as I do every day, like a good ’employee’) I was filled with a sense of wonder tinged with a massive...

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

There comes a time in every cyclists’ season when the gluttony of an extra spoon of sugar in the coffee or a cheeky pain au chocolat or three over the winter catches up with them and something snaps. When that happens and the balance of treacle sponge versus training regime swings towards the more...

“The valiant never taste of death but once”

November 20, 2012

Any regular reader will know that I like to keep my posts light hearted and simple… like me. But I’ve had this post in me for some time now and although it is not fully realised yet, I want to cack-handedly explain my point and get your views on the subject.  The modern...

Doping – The Long Game

November 13, 2012
By

This year has seen some alarming news stories surrounding cycling and the dark art of doping, some more shocking and unbelievable than others. As we head towards 2013 and an off season that will surely be filled with more finger pointing and name calling, has the future of the professional sport been saved...

Super Duper Cross

After last month’s ‘What to do next’  post I thought I’d get a closer look at Cross racing and headed to London’s Alexandra Palace for the Rapha Super Cross 2012 All photos courtesy of Rapha Although I might not have been competing this year, the fun, the bikes, the mud and of course the...

Breaking Boundaries with Martyn Ashton

October 23, 2012
By

In a week that has seen the lives of some, and the dreams of many, strewn in tatters across the internet I thought it’d be nice to bring something wonderful to the screens of the loyal readers of LovingTheBike.com. Martyn Ashton is apparently very well known in the MTB and trials scene and...

To Roswell & Amp; Beyond

October 16, 2012

In an unprecedented break from the norm, today’s post has NOTHING to do with bicycles.  What it does have a lot of is pure, unadulterated AMAZEBALLS!  Sunday saw Austrian born, Felix Baumgartner break intergalactic records and thrust his daredevil exploits in to the home of millions around the world.  Unless you have been asleep for the last week...

What To Do Now?

What To Do Now?

Following on from Darryl’s great ‘Do It Now’ post featured here yesterday, I wondered what things it would spark people into doing. This might not be as thought provoking as Darryl’s post or so centred in distant grey memories, but we’d like to help kick start some people into new challenges as the seasons...

The Funny Stuff: #CyclingFunnies

September 4, 2012
By

It’s about time we had some laughs! Summer is almost over, kids are heading back to school and some people are packing their lives in to bags and moving all over the world in search of their dreams. With that in mind I though we should try to lighten the mood a little and...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
