It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most adaptable to change. - Charles Darwin (proabably!) Whether you have just bought your first bike or have been racing for years, there is a podcast out there so full of intelligence, knowledge and heart that...

#bikeschool: Every day is a school day

As some of you may be aware I took part in a bike race on Sunday… my first race in 26 years! I’ve been cycling for a few years now and I’m a terribly competitive little so-and-so, which made me realise I was ready to step my cycling up a level. This week’s post...

#bikeschool: Live Class Roster

Evening all! Tonight we are going to try and do something a little different. To try and get a feel of where people are and what they are doing at this very moment during #bikeschool, I’m going to ask all class members (who are able to) to send in a picture from their phone...

#bikeschool: The Grand Bouclé has been Boucléd

Wow! What a month it has been in the world of professional bike racing. In an attempt to keep those post-Tour blues at bay for one more day I thought I’d share the last set of photos and videos from my time at this years Tour…. all the way back in the first week...

#bikeschool: Allez Le Tour… Encore

As promised, this week I have the sights, the sounds… and the slightly drunk provincial early evening bike races that occured over stage 2 & 3 of this years Tour whilst @SteamyWynndows, @AndyMWild & I were there. After a lot of walking on day 1 to catch the action in two of the...

#bikeschool: Allez Le Tour

The 2011 edition of the Tour is already shaping up to be a spectacular affair in more ways than one. A huge number of crashes and abandonment’s from some high profile GC contenders (though not the most in Tour history… yet), some superb breakaway riding from… yes you’ve guessed it… Tommy V and Johnny...

#bikeschool: Le Tour 101… Deux!

ED – Just as this post was about to go live I received word from the lovely people at ITV who host the Tour here in the UK that the predictions I made on behalf of LovingTheBike.com have just been published. I may be last in the list but it’s a damn fine list...

#bikeschool: Le Tour 101

After last week’s Alternative Guide to the runners and riders of this year’s Tour I got lots of requests to continue the advice across a range of other Tour related areas. I will attempt to make the next two editions of the #bikeschool blog a little more factual than the last, however I cannot...

#bikeschool: Les Solutions de Rechange

By my calculations it is exactly 18 days until the start of this years pinnacle event in the season’s calender, Le Tour de France. This year’s event is set to be a real spectacle with 4 mountain-top finishes and the re-installment of the team time trial as well as enough flat stages for the...

#bikeschool: Vacation Vacation Vacation

As time has gone on and #bikeschool has grown in popularity, our online community has forged many friendships along the way. Due to these friendships and a shared passion some class members have been lucky enough to travel across States and Counties to meet up and even ride with one another. Although I have...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
