Loving the BITE: Best Ever 10-Minute Fresh Salsa

I have a serious case of writer’s block.  Actually, I have a serious case of poison ivy from a recent trail run (which is why I should just stay on my bike).  I barely skirted the side of the trail to let an oncoming mountain biker get by.  It’s bad.  Not just a rash,...

Loving the BITE: “Arnold Palmer” Homebrew Sports Drink

I think Arnold Palmer may have been onto something.  Especially when it gets hot out, I like to use easy, refreshing homebrew drinks for fuel.  Usually, I mix one made of fruit juice, water, and salt for rides 2 hours and less. Depending on the time of day, I’ll use ice for some of...

Loving the BITE: I Scream for this EASY Coconut Milk Ice Cream

We’ve only got a few more days in May…then, it’s officially June. Officially time for ice cream.  I’ve provided this simple recipe in summers past, and thought I’d revive it just as it’s getting hot in 2014.  I just so happen to have organic frozen mango chunks in my freezer…just waiting to become Mango Coconut...

Loving the BITE: Delicious Balsamic Dressing that could Change Your Health

Here’s a shocker: I think more of our foods should be made at home.  I think when you buy a prepared food at the store, the time you save with buying it rather than making it should be spent checking (and double checking) the ingredients list.  I think athletes can stay healthy, recover better, train...

Loving the BITE: New Twist on Old-School Fuel – Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Back in the day, before the gels and bars and chomps, we used banana bread for fuel.  And, it was delicious.  This week, we’re going for a remake of my old-school favorite.  I’m adding in a few ingredients that I now know to work especially well for fuel, and I’m using oats instead of...

Loving the Bite: Meat-Eaters, Think About What Your Dinner Ate

I’ll be honest, this is likely not Darryl’s favorite recipe.  Here at Loving the Bike, we have a good amount of balance…I am a plant and meat-eater who belongs to a family that owned and operated a small Organic and Grass-fed Cattle Ranch in the mountains of Colorado for over a hundred years.  Darryl...

Loving the BITE: Recipe for the Long Ride – Carborocket Review and Giveaway

Sometimes, you’ve just got to get on your bike and ride all day.  Not a 1 hour or 2 hour ride.  But, a 5+ hour ride that allows you to comfortably get into the rhythm of cycling, while not-so-comfortably pushing your limits.  I love long bike rides. If you want to feel almost as...

Loving the BITE: Green Ginger Grapefruit Smoothie for Lean, Mean, Cycling Machines

I hate to be a downer, but I’ve got some bad news.  Grapefruits are tough to come by in the summer.  The prices go up and they’re not as plentiful.  I know, this likely ruined your Tuesday.  I guess the only thing to do is eat ’em up, while you can. This week, we’ll...

Loving the BITE: Spinach Pesto Over Spaghetti Squash Pasta

Summer’s coming, and that means it’s time to stock up on vibrant, beautiful vegetables.  Bring on the Summer Veggies.  Well, maybe it means more than that, but fresh vegetables and fruit are a wonderful part.  And, for the cyclist, summer’s wonderful cycling opportunities combined with vegetable-saturated clean-eating can make for a wonderfully healthy season....

Loving the BITE: Let your Ginger be your Medicine

Loving the BITE: Let your Ginger be your Medicine

With an average 80 revolutions per minute on the bike, knee flexion and extension occurs about 4800 times an hour.  That’s a lot of joint use.  Perhaps joint overuse throughout an entire season.  It’s estimated that 50% of cyclists experience knee joint pain as an overuse injury, in addition to other joint overuse pain...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
