Loving the BITE: Spring is for Grilled Salmon

It’s officially grilling season, right? While I’m sure that many of you have been using your grill year round, I’m talking about the official season, when you don’t have to put on gloves and a beanie just to take a peek at your dinner. A few years ago, when my oven died, I (mostly...

Loving the BITE: Take Pre-Ride Nutrition to the Next Level

We’ve covered Pre-Ride Nutrition a few times before. The carbs. The calories. The timing. The type of foods (easy to digest, and my preference, liquified into a smoothie). This week, we’re going to add in some advanced ingredients to take your pre-ride nutrition to the next level. I’ve mentioned each of them individual in past...

Loving the BITE: The Great Beta-Alanine Buffer

There’s a lot of hype out there. And, despite all the hype over specific amino acids, vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients that will truly impact your ride or performance in a way that is actually worth the cost and effort of it, there are really very few that will deliver on the promise. In...

Loving the BITE: Green Goddess for Cyclists

Green Goddess for Cyclists. You read that right, but were talking about a delicious, healthful dressing; and not a beautiful oddly-pigmented Greek myth. Even so, stick with me, it will be worth it. Why take the time to make your own dressing when you could just buy it? It’s all about what you’ll gain...

Loving the BITE: Delicious Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Smoothie

You may think this is just going too far.  It’s one thing to put turmeric in a curry sauce, but quite another to start adding it to a morning smoothie. Well, I dare you. There are oh-so-many reasons to add turmeric (and ginger) to just about everything. If you haven’t noticed, I do add...

Loving the Bite: Should you be a Dairy-Free Cyclist?

For many cyclists, there is an obvious answer to this question. Either you’re allergic, intolerant, feel great without it, or have ethical/religious reasons against consuming dairy. For you the answer is a resounding: Dairy-Free. For others, it be not be so clear-cut. You don’t seem to notice ill effects with it, but maybe you’d...

Loving the BITE: Quick “Milk-Shake” for Advanced Recovery

When you think of cycling and training, do visions of health and fitness come to mind? Most likely they do, and for good reason.  Consistent exercise and training obviously offer many health benefits.  But for many cyclists, it also carries the risk of going too far, actually damaging muscles and cells, and causing fatigue...

Loving the BITE: Anti-Leg-Cramp Smoothie

Recently, a reader and a former client contacted me to ask how to reduce their leg cramps. One was experiencing cramps ride after ride once he hit the 30 mile mark, and another was experiencing them in the middle of the night after riding, and occasionally on a random evening. Neither are any fun.  But, it...

Loving the BITE: Fruit Strip Fuel

It’s no secret that I often shop outside the “sports nutrition” aisle when picking out training fuel.  Even if you don’t have the time or want to go for full-on homemade fuel, there are real food options for you. One of my current favorites is fruit strips. When I was growing up, they were not called “fruit...

Loving the BITE: See and Be Seen

A little over a month or so ago, I was asked to review a reflective vest for cycling in the dark. Since I’m often up long before the sun cycling, mountain biking, running or skiing, I thought this post would be a perfect fit…and, I hoped the vest would as well. When it comes...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
