Tipping Point

Tipping Point

I have this problem, a decision problem. You see, when I decide to go out for a ride, it’s often not the first time I’ve decided it. I usually have an internal argument on whether I should and want to ride that goes on for awhile, sometimes until it’s too late, and the decisions...

The Scavenger

The Scavenger

Growing up I used to go to tag sales and flea markets with my mom. I collect old cameras, so it was always a mission to find one, but anything I thought was neat would get picked up. I love going on the hunt for something, and it’s no surprise that one of the...

I’m Too Slow for You

I’m Too Slow for You

“I’m too slow for you…” I hear this every once in a while from people I want to ride with, and it drives me nuts. Apparently I’ve become one of the faster ones, instead of always last. It’s a new experience for me, and I think it’s more to do with the fact that...

Back in the USA

After a couple of long flights and two days in Tokyo I am now back in the US until mid-January. Tokyo served as a nice re-introduction to reality, weather-wise, and I’m getting used to just feeling cold, all the time. Tokyo also had an interesting cycling culture, at least from what I saw while...

The A Ride

The A Ride

I just got my arse handed to me. It happens every Tuesday morning; I show up, hang with the guys as long as I can, get dropped, recover, catch up to someone who is hopefully a little faster than me so I can push myself and then finally meet up with the group at...

An Epic Ride

An Epic Ride

What’s the longest ride you’ve ever done? 50 miles, 80, a century? For me it was 104 miles from the outskirts of Boston, up to the peak of Mt. Wachusett (which is a ski area, by the way) and back. It was, by far, the toughest physical and mental thing I had ever endured. By...

The Rest Week

The Rest Week

After riding the bike 11 hours two weeks ago, I took most of last week off and only went slightly crazy. I generally take Monday’s off from riding, but every month I take a week easy to recover and regroup. The time I normally ride are instead spent cleaning, maintaining and upgrading the bike...

There are countless bicycle inspired videos out there, but when Dylan Nord asked for my opinion on what he put together…I told him it was worthy of being shared.  So here it is….Deux North.  Below the video is Dylan’s words on what inspired him to put it together. Deux North by Dylan...

Learning to Love the Bike Again

Two years ago my husband crashed on his (and mine) first mountain bike ride and broke his leg in a couple of places. After surgery, physical therapy and two years of letting the injury heal (and grow accustomed to the new hardware in his ankle) I finally convinced him to join me on a...

Learning to MTB

I’m not a mountain biker. I love coming up to someones wheel and sprinting around them, catching the draft in a paceline and carving corners on a quick descent, but all on pavement. I’ve dabbled in off-road bits before on my cross bike, but never anything too technical or challenging. Off-road for me is...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
