That’s Ok.

I haven’t seriously ridden a bike in three weeks, and that’s ok. By seriously ridden I mean riding with the intention of getting a workout, and not just trying to survive. I rode on Sunday, but wasn’t feeling well so I made it 25 miles before calling it quits. I thought about riding during...

Hitting the Deck

I hit the deck today. It was a ridiculous crash, but it still bloody hurt. In the end I have a bruise and scrapes on my hip, sidewalk rash on shin and elbows and in general my whole right side is not happy. I was walking the dog. Well, kinda. I hate walking the...

N + 1

N + 1

Ask any cyclist, and they will understand the uniquely cycling-specific principle of N + 1. If you’re one of them triathlete types, or stumbled across cycling one day, N + 1 is the principle of having the appropriate number of bicycles. N is the number of bikes you have now, and + 1 is...

The Descent

The Descent

On this morning’s hammerfest, between feeling like I was going to be sick or pass out, I thought about how well, or not, I’m doing on the bike. When I first started riding with these guys, I could barely stay with them for a kilometer before I was spat out the back. Now I...

5 Easy Ways to Stay Healthy While Travelling

One of the cool things about living in a place like Grenada, is you get to meet people from all over the world.  A couple hardcore travel bloggers have been here for the past few months and I’ve had a great time getting to know them.  They’ve been on the road for the past...

Cycling the Malaysia Interstate: Support and Hotels

Cycling the Malaysia Interstate: Support and Hotels

Last week I wrote up my experience riding Interstate, a three-day, 525 km ride in Malaysia. During the event I spent a good chunk riding, and slightly more time in the van doing support for other riders. Having done support for an ultracyclist, I was familiar with how it should work, and how important...

Riding Interstate

As I mentioned last week, after doing the Interstate event I was exhausted, and not quite ready to process how the three days of riding unfolded. I was finally able to sit and write my account of the weekend. Day 1: Kota Damansara – Fraser Hill The first day of Interstate found me ambivalent...

Right Now – Because YOU Matter

I am honored beyond belief to share this amazing #MakeitHappen story by my friend (and Loving the Bike Army General), Eric Hutchins.  All I did was ask if he’d write a post about how the song “Right Now” changed his life, and what I got in response was this incredibly emotional and inspiring story. Right...

The Night Rider

This isn’t the first time my cycling brother from down under has posted on Loving the Bike.  Mark (aka @Lycra_Loony) is an amazing guy/husband/dad who lives without a driver’s license.  Yeah, this dude is the real deal and is Loving the Bike every single day. Interstate at a Glance

Riding in Malaysia is an amazing thing. If you’re a serious cyclist and can ever make it out this way, please do. The possible terrain you can ride in a single day can’t be topped, between high mountain climbs, miles of fast downhills and ocean side flats, you’ll never for want of a better...

Readying for Interstate

This weekend is the Interstate ride, a three-day, 500km event through areas of mainland Malaysia. The first day we’re starting near Kuala Lumpur and riding up Fraser Hill. The second takes us into the Cameron Highlands, and the last day is downhill towards the ocean. It sells out quickly so you need to jump...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
