Make it Happen Monday: The Rituals of Radiant Living

About ten and a half years ago, I made a presentation at a business breakfast meeting.  This was no ordinary speech…I addressed a bunch of businessy type people wearing my totally “non-businessy” bright yellow pants, and delivered the presentation while sitting up on the speaking podium.  This day stands out to me, not because...

Make it Happen Monday: Life’s Moments

I got caught up in the Zone while the wind rushed into my face.  I was on my bike, and for that fleeting second….I was Lance Armstrong. I held my Baby Boy on my shoulder.  Together we watched the Trees, the Birds, the Earth.  My Life suspended in Perfection. Laying on the couch with...

Are You Thinking of Moving in the Car – Less/Light Direction?

One of the coolest things that I’ve come across since starting this Loving the Bike site is learning about all the people out there living Car-Less.  I’m totally amazed by what these people are doing and have the utmost respect for anyone who has chosen to take this route in life. There is also...

Make it Happen Monday: Leap

Sometimes I have to remind myself what Make it Happen Monday is all about.  I dug out a poem I wrote years ago and would like to share it with you all.  Make it Happen…..and sometimes you just have to: Leap I took a leap of faith today It was nothing like I thought...

May the Wind Be at Your Back, and the Sun Upon Your Face

The last time I had my friend Ian (aka @PedalmanTO) contribute to the blog, he told us all about “Keeping the Rubber Side Down“.  He’s back again with another motivating and inspiring cycling story. May the Wind Be at Your Back, and the Sun Upon Your Face - by Ian “PedalmanTO At some point...

Who’s Myth Are You Living?

A few weeks ago I came across what I felt was one of the most powerful posts I’ve read in a very long time.  It spoke very strongly to me and I felt it would make a great addition to our Make it Happen Monday series over here at Loving the Bike.  So today...

Get S.T.O.K.E.D. For Your Cycling Goals

Like everything in life, it’s a lot simpler to achieve something when you set a goal for yourself and go after it.  I mentioned a simple formula for goal achievement in last week’s “Make It Happen Mondays” post: Create a goal, Get excited about it, and Make it Happen….and this week I’m here to...

40 Feet

Have you ever heard the quote, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”?  I think it was Confucius who coined that one.  How about this one…“The journey of a cyclist begins with the first 40 feet”? When you set off for a ride, you’ve most likely got an idea of...

Keep on Making it Happen

I had only planned on running our “Make it Happen Mondays” feature for the month of January….but every week is a great time to Make it Happen, right?  I received a whole lot of positive feedback on our Monday feature, so I’ve decided to keep on Making it Happen. One year ago yesterday, the...

Bryan is Making it Happen

When we came out with our Cycling for Optimal Weight min-e-book on December 27th, we offered up the challenge (and reward) for all those who would commit to going on the program.  Five of you responded saying you were ready to go after your ideal weight using cycling to help get you there. Out...

Please BE KIND to Cyclists

You just can’t beat the phrase, “Please BE KIND to Cyclists” when it comes to conveying our feelings towards motorists.  It’s a message that all of us cyclists would like to pass along to our machine powered friends….and our spouses, children, and friends feel the same way. On a beautiful Austin morning in September...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean ”lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
