Cycling: Lose Yourself. Find Yourself

There’s no denying that surfing is an incredible zen-like sport where people can jump right into nature, become one with the environment, and kiss God all at once.  But I’d like to add cycling to the small list of activities that help you lose yourself and find yourself all at the same time. The...

He Who Hesitates is a Damned Fool

I’d have to try really hard to find some sort of connection between the legendary actress, May West, and cycling….but because I love this quote of hers so much I’m going to do my best to make it happen.  (Oh, and I’ve decided to take off the “Make it Happen Monday” part off the...

Make it Happen Monday: B Strong

Can cycling save your life?  I don’t have to go any further than my friend Bethel Strong to answer that one.  Through his love for the bike, he’s been able to astound even his doctor who couldn’t believe the results he’s achieved through cycling. The absolute best part about having a blog and being...

Make it Happen Monday: Comparison to Your Best Self

I’m definitely of the opinion that we should strive to be the best person that we can possibly be….but sometimes making comparisons to your “best self” can have negative results. When I was around 14 years old, I spent a lot of my summers playing golf.  My friends and I would bike over to...

What’s it Like to Ride the Tour Divide?

Have you ever thought about taking the challenge of competing in the Tour Divide?  This is an “underground” cycling race that has become increasingly more popular over the years, and my friend Vance McMurry knows exactly what it’s all about because he gave it a shot last year. Known as the world’s toughest mountain...

Make it Happen Monday: Operation Opportunity

At one point in my life I was faced with a decision, and the wisdom that was provided to me was “Always Walk in the Direction of Opportunity”.  That statement has stuck with me these past 12 or so years and it’s been the reasoning behind my move to St. Kitts, my first move...

Make it Happen Monday: Today vs Tomorrow Challenge

Do you ever struggle between the idea of “living each day like it’s your last” and “preparing for your future”?  I know I definitely do, and it can sometimes make life…interesting, to say the least. I’m a firm believer in living out your dreams, today, and not putting things off until tomorrow.  But on...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
