Slow Ride Time spent wandering, thinking. Silent. Long, slow, distance. Color, crunch. Dark, desolate. Always exploring.   Fall ride, feed my soul. Take me away from the hurry.   Fall ride. Slow ride.   - Suzanne

Fear

Fear

I was out on Sunday with my favorite riding partner and we passed this word – the only unnatural thing on the expanse of this wall along the train tracks.  I told him I wanted to stop, and he waited patiently for me while I took this photo. We started off again.  He was...

Releasing the Death Grip

Releasing the Death Grip

Last Fall I bought a mountain bike.  Nothing fancy…a good, basic beginner bike.  I had never ridden off-road before; paved streets and sidewalks were the only terrain I needed to navigate growing up in the city. I’ve been riding this bike quite a bit in the last few weeks.  It sat idle all summer...

Collecting Cans

I was riding down Milwaukee Avenue Sunday morning when this type caught my eye: “It’s not where you’r from it’s where you’r at”  I circled around to find it.  Although I could see it from the street, the building was set back a little, tucked along the EL tracks. I propped my bike against...

Leaving Marks

Fall has arrived, and with it another year starts to wind down.  Where does the time go?  And what have I done this year to make a difference? I think about this often, especially as each year ticks away. As you get older you realize it’s not about what you have, it’s about what...

The Bikes of Georgetown, Penang

The Bikes of Georgetown, Penang

Darryl gave me grief last week for sending him a video of me biking around the area, when it looks like any other area in the states, so Sunday I made it a mission to photograph as many cyclists around Penang as I could.  During the week I rarely leave my fortress, so it’s...

The Girl

The Girl by Suzanne Deveney I spotted her late one night while heading home.  I was in my car, stopped at the red light when she caught my eye.  The light turned green and I needed to move, but she did not leave my thoughts. The next time I was on my bike I...

We never seem to get overly artsy here at Loving the Bike, so when my Twitter pal @soozed said she’d be interested in posting a picture and text each month from one of her rides…..I knew it would help provide this sort of content. Here’s the first in what I hope is many more...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
