Vincenzo Nibali Wins 101st Tour de France by Rio Sinclair Nibali took the lead early in this edition of the Tour de France and for 18 consecutive days, nobody got even close of overtaking him. He showed extreme resilience throughout the most difficult stages of the competition and with three rounds left in the...

The Smell of a Grenada Ride

July 30, 2014
By

I just got home from my ride, and felt the need to write about the smells I took in today.  Yeah, you heard me right….Smells.  I don’t seem to ever recall a ride where I noticed smells like I did today.  Sure there are times where I’m behind a garbage truck or going past...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour – Back on the Road

After taking 10 days off to be part of a reality survival show in the bayous, Rob is back on the bike and is ready to start pedaling again.  But, in order to Goodfluence as many people as possible on this tour….he left the deep south yesterday and flew straight up from New Orleans to Minneapolis.  Today he’s...

Crewing for an Ultracyclist

Crewing for an Ultracyclist

Ultracycling, to me, is the hardest form of the sport. The riders who race in ultracycling events have to battle themselves, both physically and mentally. Not to mention mechanicals, weather and the terrain. Last week I had the privilege to meet someone who is gunning for 100 UMCA records, already with 82 to his...

Do You Want 2 Fingers or 1?

July 21, 2014
By

A lot of cyclists may have issues with this one, but I’m not afraid to admit that I give the middle finger to any driver doing something dangerous or stupid.  I’ll even give them the finger when I see them doing something stupid to someone else while I’m rolling by.  But I’m not biased…..I’ll...

I’m stuck. Now what?

I’m stuck. Now what?

I had an assignment: create a one-sheet that a client can use to sell their product. No problem. As a designer and writer, I’ve created thousands of sell sheets over the span of my (very long) career. Well, no problem until I sat down to actually do it. Uncharacteristically, I couldn’t even come up...

Not Just Another Sunglasses Post: Ryders Eyewear

Surprise, surprise….I’m doing another post on sunglasses.  This has got to be at least the seventh time I’ve dedicated a post to this topic, but for me they really are the closest thing to being part of my body.  There isn’t any other one accessory that I wear as often as my sunglasses, and they...

The Lost Month

The Lost Month

July is a lost month for cycling fans. Our DVR fills with 21 stage races that are watched and re-watched, armchair analyzed as if we could have an inkling as to what riders are experiencing. We watch colors of the peloton cut through lush green pastures as helicopters capture the speed of riders moving...

Goodfluence Bicycle Tour – Week 5

I’ve been talking about Rob Greenfield and all the goodfluence he’s spreading across America for the past few weeks now.  Yes, he loves the bike.  Yes, he loves the planet.  And yes, he is totally authentic and genuine in all he does. This week I wanted to share his passion for creating a better world...

What? @lovingthebike Got Instagrammed?

I may have people calling me a social media maverick, but I’m definitely not well-rounded like a lot of the social marketing guru’s out there.  The main reason is because I refuse to join the smart phone revolution.  Yeah, that’s right…..I don’t (and don’t intend to) own anything other than a simple pay as you go...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
