#headtraining

For the past several years, I’ve participated in a winter training program run by a local Cat 1 racer. Twice a week cyclists of all levels gather and ride trainers: two hours on Saturday morning, 90 minutes on Wednesday evenings. The program runs from December through March, and people like me go and torture ourselves,...

Logan Square

Logan Square

I wake early on Saturday. Instinctively I look toward the bottom of the bed for my dog – but he’s no longer there. Fully awake now, I head downstairs to pour coffee that has been timed to brew and is waiting for me. The aroma of freshly brewed beans fills my senses as I...

Spotted Soigneur

I lost my little buddy this week. For the last 13 years, he has been my shadow. Wherever I went in the house, he was with right there with me. In the winter months, I would ride the trainer and he would sit close by and watch me, never getting much further away than...

Independence Days

Last week, our very own Darryl from lovingthebike.com asked this question on Twitter: “What’s on your cycling Christmas wish list?” Without hesitation I responded, “Time and health to ride.” I was with my family for Thanksgiving. We spent a fair amount of time after dinner talking about my dad — including the fact that...

The Cycling with Music Debate Continues

The topic of cycling with earphones and music always seems to cause a heated debate.  It’s been a while since I’ve voiced my opinion on this subject, so it’s time to unleash the beast once again. Cycling with music is so taboo that it’s against the law in several States in the USA, as...

Feelin’ Dizzy

Feelin’ Dizzy

Love.  Never has a word been so misused. It’s used to describe just about anything we like: I love tacos. I love bikes. I love shoes. I love Led Zeppelin. Ah, but add the word “you” into that phrase and it becomes something entirely different. That changes everything, doesn’t it? That little phrase makes...

My Backyard

My Backyard

It was drizzling as I left my house early Saturday morning. The wind was coming from the south and it was strong. I headed that way first. Less than a mile from my house I was stopped at a red light. I had no plan for that morning other than to ride and clear...

Circling Grenada by Bike

Generally speaking, Caribbean countries are quite small when compared to the rest of the world.  This may be true, but it also depends on how you look at it.  Sure, the main island road that takes you around the perimeter of Grenada is less than 100 kms in distance, but this is very deceiving.  Especially when...

Slow Ride Time spent wandering, thinking. Silent. Long, slow, distance. Color, crunch. Dark, desolate. Always exploring.   Fall ride, feed my soul. Take me away from the hurry.   Fall ride. Slow ride.   – Suzanne

Change….Begins With You

It begins with you… I started to respond to the “Please Stop Killing Cyclists” post, and after a couple hours of writing I realized this might be a better blog.  Whenever I read a story about anyone losing a life in an accident it tears me up, life is so, so valuable and to have...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
