My Preconceived Cycling Notions Debunked

I feel like I know a little about nutrition and fitness, so along with that I have my thoughts and beliefs on certain things. Well, I recently had some of these preconceived notions debunked as I discover what I thought is not necessarily reality. Eating Before a Ride: I’ve always felt that a meal...

On a Ride

On a Ride

You’re on your bike; not your bike because yours is broken, so you’re riding a loaner that happens to fit and have the right pedals. You’re climbing a mountain; the grade is constant and not steep but never ending. Each switchback reveals another switchback, and you just want to take a break. It’s quiet,...

Leaving Marks

Fall has arrived, and with it another year starts to wind down.  Where does the time go?  And what have I done this year to make a difference? I think about this often, especially as each year ticks away. As you get older you realize it’s not about what you have, it’s about what...

A Road Cyclist Enters the World of Cross Bike

Over the past few years, cyclocross has continued to grow in popularity and this type of cycling has definitely grabbed my attention.  But until now, it has always just been something that interests me. All over the world, there are road cyclists making the move to cross bikes (aka cx or cyclocross).  Some get...

United Kingdom: The Lake District by Bike

The UK is home to a myriad of National Parks, which is something I didn’t know until recently.  Many of the parks have something which makes them stand out from the others – the Yorkshire Dales has its rolling hills, the Peak District has its caves and Dartmoor has its forests.  As for the United Kingdom Lake...

The Bikes of Georgetown, Penang

Darryl gave me grief last week for sending him a video of me biking around the area, when it looks like any other area in the states, so Sunday I made it a mission to photograph as many cyclists around Penang as I could.  During the week I rarely leave my fortress, so it’s...

Pack On 20% More Weight, and Ride

Do you know what it feels like to ride a bike as someone heavier than you currently are?  Yeah, kind of a strange question. The other day I rode my mountain bike to work and then from there I rode off carrying an additional 20 pounds of stuff in my backpack.  I rode for...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
