20 Chicago Type Photos

As a writer and designer, letters and words are a large part of my life — beyond what we all use in our daily life. I use words to tell a story, to evoke emotion, and to compel an action. So too do street artists whose work I see throughout the city. I’m fascinated...

Slow Down

Slow Down

I might not be a total speed junkie in all areas of life, but when it comes to cycling I most definitely am.  So it may seem a little strange that I’ve titled this post, “Slow Down”. You see, I feel happiest on my bike when I’m moving fast.  In life, I always seem to also be...

Flexibility On and Off the Bike

In my opinion, there are two kinds of flexibility important to us cyclists…physical flexibility, and being flexible to change things when necessary.  I’ve posted about physical flexibility in the past, and still do four simple stretches to maintain my flexibility.  You can check out my four cycling stretches right here. But if you have...

Cycling On Your Vacation

February 12, 2014

I want to know more about your vacation travel plans, and if cycling is part of determining where you travel next. As a guy who loves cycling and travel….as well as someone who just happens to own a Caribbean bicycle tour and rental company, it would help me out a lot if I knew more...

All this for a bike swap?

The alarm went off before sunrise. After all, if you’re going to drive almost three hours to a bike swap, you need to get an early start. I glanced out the window and my first thought was that it was foggy outside. No, it was in fact, snowing. Again. Winter in Chicago has been...

Celebrating with Bob

It’s not the first time I’ve mentioned that our Loving the Bike birthday falls on the same day as that of Bob Marley.  I swear I never intentionally launched this site to coincide with him.  But here I am celebrating four years of Loving the Bike along with my man, Bob, who would have...

At What Point Do You Need More?

No matter how hard I plan on pushing things, I’m able to knock out a ride of 30 miles or less without thinking about it too much.  I don’t do any additional preparation, don’t bring extra water, and don’t use any hydration tabs, gels, bloks, or anything else.  But, when I go over that...

Okay, so who doesn’t want increased energy, enhanced endurance, and improved recovery?  Like it or not, we’re living in an age of sports enhancing performance products.  Some contain things that make them illegal in sport…and for good reason, because along with improving your performance they will totally mess up your body.  There’s also a...

It’s Just a Number

Jens Voigt ended stage three of the Tour Down Under wearing the most aggressive rider jersey. By professional cycling standards, Jens is an “old” man at 42. Yet his drive and determination keep him competitive and a joy for fans to watch. There’s nothing like Jens in the break. Whenever he decides to go...

Black Snow

Black Snow

The gray days of winter drag on, and black snow lines city streets. A melancholy seeps into my pores, born of missing long, leisurely rides. Over the years, I’ve come to rely on riding as a stress reliever, my main mode of exercise, and creative thinking time. Without it, I struggle. I miss...

Failure No More: Joel’s Year End Review

Failure No More by Joel (@reasons2ride) Do you ever read those, “The Year in Review” articles?  Who did what, who married who, who passed away…I do, and I’m always amazed at how much happens in a year.  Looking back at 2013, the stories that stuck out most, in no order, were: My wife graduating...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
