The Cycling Warrior

Back around 2005, I felt like I had gotten myself into the groove of being a road biker and I started to venture out on longer and longer rides.  This was around the time I was living in Austin, Texas and with great cycling roads and the aura of cycling glory oozing all around...

Cycling Grenada: My Toughest 60

When you live on a mountainous Caribbean island, the amount of route options is very limited.  On a daily basis, if I want to ride over 20 miles I either have to head up coast and do some pretty serious climbing or opt for monotonous loops. I don’t like either option, really……so most of...

Pump Your Fist for the 2015 Cycling Season

In many parts around the world, cyclists are busting open the doors of their pain caves and putting their bicycle wheels to pavement.  Spring is here, and the 2015 cycling season has begun. If it’s still a winter wonderland where you are located, have no fear.  It’s on the way, so you might just...

I Still Do, #Livestrong

If all you’re concerned about is Lance Armstrong being a doping, lying, cheating cyclist…then you’re focused on the wrong story. It’s not your fault, really.  Our entire society revolves around the wrong story most of the time. Think about it for a second.  War and violence will always get 1000% more exposure than stories...

Oh, the Things I Say on my Bike

Oh, the Things I Say on my Bike

On a day to day basis, I’m really not a person who goes around swearing.  In fact, I rarely let the f-bombs fly.  But get me on a bike, and it’s like I’m an entirely different person. Yeah, the verbal smack down I give out would totally make your head spin.  If you haven’t...

Farrah: Every Bike Has a Story

She’s a rustic old frame on two tired out wheels, and our family knows her as Farrah. We were living in Austin, and looking for a vintage bike for my antique loving wife.  She came across a Columbia bicycle on Craigslist, and it instantly spoke to her.  The bike was located West of town,...

Consistency and Change

The Sun rises each and every day of the year, and although it is a continually constant thing, I never have, and probably never will tire of watching this site. It is a regular occurrence that consistently brings a smile to my face. Speaking of consistency, let me talk about this word for a...

The Best Place to Think

The Best Place to Think

You’d think my answer to this question would be “on the bicycle”, right?  That used to be part of the answer, but under my current environment and conditions….it is not. We all need time to totally clear our head so that we can remember the important things that we’ve forgotten about, and focus on...

The Conspiracy Cyclist

Have you ever watched any of the Zeitgeist conspiracy movies?  Well, if you’re like me you wouldn’t call them conspiracy.  You’d call them reality. Yeah, I’m one of those that totally hasn’t bought into what the Government (or Secret Government) is doing to us.  But I’d rather have you watch one of the Zeitgeist movies...

When Fatigue is More Than Fatigue

When Fatigue is More Than Fatigue by Layla As much as I love cycling, I’ve been noticing that my legs are starting to feel heavy after each ride. Doing some research, I realized that most of this boils down to fatigue. However, that’s just part of the story. There are actually different types of...

The Driver’s Lazy Foot

Want to know one of the major issues causing vehicle – bicycle collisions?  The driver’s lazy foot. Of course this is just my own personal research story, and a lot of it is based on educated opinion and not fact…..but I am confident in saying that if this issue could be fixed, we’d have a...

You Can’t Silence Me or Bob Marley

You Can’t Silence Me or Bob Marley

By some massively cool coincidence, Loving the Bike shares the same birthday with the legend, Bob Marley.  Today, we turn five….and if Bob was still around we’d be clinking mellow mood cans and toasting his 70th. In honor of our special day, I thought it would be perfect timing to share a true Bob...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
