Cycling Clothing For the Love of the Bicycle

My favorite line of cycling clothing is Viva la Bicicleta.  No question.  I love their style, I love their mission, and I love their forward way of thinking.  Best of all, it’s a small little company…..the kind I like to support the most. Viva la Bicicleta Philosophy: Get everyone out on a bike and...

2 National titles, 3 National Records, and a trip to the emergency room (luckily only suffered some road rash) = another very successful 2015 racing season! But all good things must come to an end, which can only mean one thing……………………it’s the OFF-SEASON!!! The previous 2 years I’ve raced Cyclocross during the off-season and...

Loving the BITE: Fuel Right with a Side of Cycling Community Generosity

It’s with a heavy heart that I write this week’s Loving the Bite. A car-bike accident has recently claimed the life of another cyclist. A dad. A husband. A life. This time, it happened on Lookout Mountain Road in Golden, CO, a wonderfully fun road route that I ride frequently. Every crash like this is extremely...

Reckless Cycling

I’m in no way trying to promote reckless cycling in any way, but I wanted to get a feel for how all of you label your riding.  Are you conservative, reckless, adventurous, scared?  What kind of adjective would you use for yourself? I sat down for a minute to think of what word first...

Loving the BITE: Sweet Potato Quinoa for Lunch, Carb Load, & Recovery

Sometimes my lunch is boring. As in same ol’ yawn-inducing boring. How ’bout yours? Other times, I have a stroke of genius and come up with a great meal that is nourishing, energizing, and exciting (as exciting as lunch can be, anyway). If you’re packing your lunch, you may go through these ups and downs...

Okay, so I love being in my element in everything I do.  Sure, I may seem like I’m an extrovert….but it’s only when I’m in a situation where I feel totally at home and comfortable.  I’m all about my element and do all I can to stay right there in it as much as...

What Has Being Impatient Done For Me?

I can honestly still remember the very first time I ever made a purchase in a store all by myself.  I was nervous, anxious, and shy.  Upon paying for the item, I quickly asked the lady checking me out if I could get a bag.  Her response stays with me to this day…..”Didn’t your...

Loving the BITE: Fish Tacos & Vitamin D for upcoming Winter Months

I just returned from my annual beach road-trip vacation. For the week I was on the beach, I had 3 main objectives: play lots with my kids including swimming, sand castling, and wave dunking, surf some waves on our family surf board, and find and eat the most delicious fish tacos southern California has...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
