Nice post, Darryl, but I have to disagree w/ one important sentiment:
"Take the same approach as a Family. Don’t look at the big picture, just do what needs to be done today."

You *HAVE* to keep an eye on the big picture. If you don't at least check in with your target, your goal, your objective, you will end up founding about lost and woefully off-course. Too often, people live in the moment and forget the big picture. Especially when it comes to finances. They end up not being able to do the things they want in the long-term (send a kid to college, retire at age 60, whatever) because they didn't check in on their long-term goals.

But you are right - don't miss the moments of life right in front of you!

You're right, Kelly.....the daily routine is always changing....whether it's planned or now. It really is amazing how Families are able to adapt and keep on making it happen each and every day.

Thanks for your great comments.

This is a good lesson to teach our children too. I'm a firm believer in keeping babies and young toddlers on schedules. I think they thrive on routine. They need boundaries. Even with my almost 8 year old, I see this mentality shaping his academic work, his mindset, his personality. And it's all good.

But it can't come at the expense of accepting change. Adults and children (including my "I-don't-like-change" son) need to learn to adapt to change, that it is okay, that they will be okay. Families change. Circumstances change. Schedules change. Living arrangements change. Life changes. And it's hard sometimes. And yes, it'd be easier if we saw the big picture and knew what it would take to get there. Of course, it'd be awesome if our expectations held firm and we didn't veer from the path we knew. But you're right, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

When stressed out, overwhelmed and scared to keep dreaming that dream, just take "one day at a time" and do your best. Focus on that first step. Then the next one. Until you realize it can be done. I think this can be applied to both the week's homework assignments, as well as that 50 year plan I'm dreaming about....

And with that mentality - that mantra - adults and kids learn to continue working hard and just go....
