Make it Happen Monday: Keep Playing the Game
Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.
That line comes from a movie called “Cinderella Story”, which my Daughter Kassi used to watch all the time. It’s been a while since she watched it, but that quote has always sort of just stuck with me.
Sometimes our fears get the best of us, and because of it we stay out of the game. Avoid playing. Avoid the fun. Kids and adults both seem to have issues with this at times, but it’s the kids who generally are more apt to overcome their fears and try things out.
I know that our kids are often scared of trying something new. But once they finally gets over that fear and try it, they realize how awesome it really is. My Daughter Kassi had always been scared to try snorkelling when we lived in the Caribbean. It seemed like such a shame to us because here we were living on a beautiful Caribbean island with opportunities to snorkel whenever we wanted, and she wouldn’t do it. We told her about all the cool things she would see if she tried it, but the fear always kept her away. One day, she finally gave it a shot and it was right then that she realized it was nothing to fear……….and she absolutely loved it.
Sometimes the scenario is a little more complex than that. Sometimes the fear clouds our mind and our judgment and it prevents us from being able to get ourselves back in the game. It’s like your head is a great big jar full of water and sand. It’s so shaken up that the jar is full of cloudy water. But if you let that jar sit still for a little while what happens? That jar settles and becomes totally clear. Once the jar settles, we’re able to see everything free from fear, and all the other things that mix up our judgment.
Just keep playing the game. That’s really what this life is. Sure we try to make it something more….something so important and complex. But you know what? It really isn’t. It’s a fantastic game. Play. Have fun. Most of all….just participate. Don’t watch it from the sidelines.
