Biking Wisdom From My Daughter

Random Thoughts

by Kassi

Thought #1: Here in Austin, gas prices have gone up…a lot.  Most people complain about this, but in a way I think it’s good.  See, if the price of gas has gone up, then people won’t want to buy gas for their car.  Without gas, you can’t drive and you’ll be forced to ride a bike (or take a bus).  So help the environment and ride a bike.

Thought #2: In Canada, my family would go on bike rides together.  Everything looks so different, and so much prettier on a bike.  Sometimes we would drive by the places we had been on our bikes, and I wouldn’t recognize them.  My Dad will say, “we biked over there the other day” and I just can’t believe it’s the same place. Riding a bike you can relax, let your mind go blank, and enjoy.

Dad’s Thoughts: Seeing these little nuggets of wisdom that Kassi supplied to me for this post got me thinking about some of the writing she did when she was younger.  I dug around and pulled out a short little poem she wrote when she was 7. My Wife and I try as hard as any Parent to teach good values and be positive role models to our kids.  There are many times when we feel we aren’t living up to the level we would like to be at.  Always saying we are going to try harder to be the kind of person…the kind of Parent….that we wish to be.  But then all of a sudden we get cocked in the side of the head with something like this poem and we know we must be doing something right.

Kassi’s Love Poem

Be together, Stay together.

Solve problems with a positive attitude.

Help others…that’s what friends are for.

Don’t call others names.

Want a friend.  Be a friend.

Have fun every day.

Love your friends.

Love everyone you know.

Well done Kassi. And so very true. I often ride with my daughter and always enjoy our special times on the bike. Darryl, you have nothing to worry about. You are an excellent father who teaches your kids to enjoy a fun and healthy lifestyle. As I’ve said before, if you all get to our part of the world, Kayla and I would love to ride with you all.
    Ride safe.

We would love to, Mark.  I think Kassi and Kayla would get along great together.  I hope we all can get out on a ride together sometime soon.  Oh, and same thing goes for you guys if you ever venture this way.

From the mouthes of babes… Sometimes it amazes me how much intelligence and maturity kids express. Kassi is very wise. You’re obviously having a great impact on her. Way to go dad!

    • Darryl

Thank you Jessica….I’ll be sure to pass on your comments to Kassi as well. I hope you get the chance to meet her and the rest of my family in person one day soon.

I’m loving getting the bike out here, as the weather is *finally* starting to warm up (wait: does that make me a fair weather biker???).

Love the insights from your daughter and especially her poem – you are definitely doing something right….

    • Darryl

Thanks Lance….I really appreciate your comments. I’m sure I’m with all parents when I say….we try our best.

This is a terrific poem Kassi, it speaks to creating great footprints that others will follow. It also shows that your parents are one of a kind and you are a very lucky young lady.

Kassidy, great stuff, and like Pamela I also think it was really good getting together with you guys last week, even if it was like a hurricane :). I really agree with your thoughts on biking and loved the way you said it. The same is very true for me. Seeing something while riding a bike gives you a completely different perspective. It one of the things that I love about riding. Everything seems more colorful and sharper and more interesting.
    Keep on WRITING and RIDING.
