Nutrition Question: I’ve always heard that clear pee, and peeing in general, are good signs of being well hydrated.  After a strenuous ride, can I use this test to judge adequate fluid and electrolyte intake? Kelli’s Answer:  Yes and no.  First, clear pee is a good sign that you’ve hydrated well.  And, it’s good...

Cycling Scars

This post is dedicated to all you cyclists who have been injured while on the bike, heal up, and continue to cycle along….battle scars and all.  I wouldn’t say that I personally have had any major crashes on the bike, but even the couple minor ones I’ve been involved in have left me a...

Reveal the Path: A Life-Changing Film, Not Just For Cyclists

Reveal the Path may be a film described as a “visually stunning adventure by bike”, but even more so it’s what I would call an “auditory spectacle of incredible life wisdom”. Last night I joined the sold out crowd at the Alamo Drafthouse here in Austin to experience the Texas premier of this amazing...

Cycling: It’s in Our Roots

13
Jun
2012

Our common passion for cycling just might be a lot deeper than we all think.  I’m here to ponder how our love for the bike (and the wheel), likely dates back to the beginning of time.  (Note: This post isn’t intended to create an uproar about the creation of life on Earth….but it’s going...

What Causes Saddle Sores?

12
Jun
2012

I don’t generally get them, but for some reason I’ve been struck down by some nasty saddle sores this past month.  It’s got me to thinking what the heck I’m doing differently and what’s bringing them on. Saddle Sore: noun 1. an irritation or sore on a horse caused by the rubbing of a poorly adjusted saddle. 2. an irritation or sore on a rider caused by a bicycle saddle. The development of saddles sores can be a bit...

How to Avoid Bonking

09
Jun
2012

Nutrition Question: I’m often asked how to avoid “bonking” on long rides, runs, and especially, races.  After all the preparation, no one wants to end up in the fetal position on the side of the trail or road.  Many athletes feel that they have their nutrition dialed in, but still fear the notorious bonk...

Loving the BITE: Fresh Chocolaty Orange Fuel Bars

Back by popular demand, another homemade, real-food, training fuel bar.  We received so much positive feedback from the fresh lemon bar that we thought we’d do it again.  In fact, I have to personally add to the positive feedback (yes, to myself, thank you), as I’ve been loving the lemon bars on my recent...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
