Hashtag Tuesday: #ShutUpLegs

It’s got to be one of the most popular (and repeated) cycling quotes of all time….and who doesn’t just love that Jens Voigt dude?  You can’t keep an awesome quote like this one away from Twitter, and #shutuplegs has definitely become a well used hashtag.  But do you know the history of “Shut up Legs”...

If the whole #30daysofbiking thing wasn’t exciting and challenging enough, we’ve now got Team #LovingtheBike created to make it even more fantastic. There’s one video clip that I never got around to posting from the 2011 North American Handmade Bicycle Show held in Austin earlier this year.  Ron, from King Cage had a simple little display…but this dude caused quite the stir. Ron started King Cage in 1991 and began making bottle cages out of Titanium...

Are You Thinking of Moving in the Car – Less/Light Direction?

One of the coolest things that I’ve come across since starting this Loving the Bike site is learning about all the people out there living Car-Less.  I’m totally amazed by what these people are doing and have the utmost respect for anyone who has chosen to take this route in life. There is also...

Hashtag Tuesday: #30daysofbiking

I’d have to say that the very first cycling hashtag to ever catch my attention was #30daysofbiking. It was a genius idea by @patiomensch and @zachamon, and officially launched on April 1, 2010 (and I’m still kicking myself for not thinking of something like this myself). On April 1 they’ll kick off round three of #30daysofbiking….are...

Loving the BITE: St Patrick’s Day Special

Loving the BITE: Irish Stew with Ale I have been told that more than a few LTB readers are beer drinkers.  And, although there’s often confusion regarding the health benefits and detriments of alcohol, I’ll be happy to set the record straight: moderate amounts, defined as 1-6 oz. glass of wine, 1-12 oz. glass...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
