Best Job Ever

I’ve had some pretty cool jobs in my time, but nothing can compare to the position of Mountain Bike Tour Guide that I once held….oh, and I should also mention that this job was located on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Okay, so having a job that puts you on the seat of...

Fruit Juice Remember juice glasses?  The ones your Grandma had in her cupboard and held ~4-6 ounces?  In most kitchens, these are long gone.  When you pour yourself a glass of juice, you’re getting the same calories and grams of carbohydrates (without any of the fiber) you’d find in a piece of fruit, FOR...

Shannon and I Reminisce Cycling in SKB

It might be a tiny little island, but the Caribbean island of St. Kitts is home to some of the West Indies best cycling. Actually, it’s sister island Nevis is pretty dang good for cycling as well.  The area of the twin-islands is 261 square kilometers (101 square miles), with St. Kitts occupying 168 square kilometers...

By posting this, I realize that I’ve lost all hope of ever having my site sponsored by Gatorade (or Pepsico for that matter)…but I thought it made for an interesting story so I’m sharing it here today.   On one of the routes that I’ve been riding over here in Florida, I roll past...

There is no shortage of blog posts, Twitter threads, and Linkedin comments talking about cycling with your iPod….but I wanted to join in on this one for a minute.  I’ve been listening to music while biking ever since I got my first mp4 player six months after becoming a road cyclist.  The first day...

Have you ever ridden in Florida?  Well, up until last week I hadn’t….but I’d heard a lot about it. The one constant theme that would echo whenever I’ve heard people talking about riding here is “It’s really flat”. Hey, I grew up in the Prairies of Canada and I know all too well what...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
