All this for a bike swap?

The alarm went off before sunrise. After all, if you’re going to drive almost three hours to a bike swap, you need to get an early start. I glanced out the window and my first thought was that it was foggy outside. No, it was in fact, snowing. Again. Winter in Chicago has been...

Celebrating with Bob

It’s not the first time I’ve mentioned that our Loving the Bike birthday falls on the same day as that of Bob Marley.  I swear I never intentionally launched this site to coincide with him.  But here I am celebrating four years of Loving the Bike along with my man, Bob, who would have...

Loving the Bite: Powerhouse Lunch and Condiment Swap

How would you describe your afternoons? Energized and productive? Ready for a great ride? Or lethargic and ready for a nap? If the latter, you may want to take a look at your lunch.  If it’s typically loaded down with processed foods and refined carbohydrates, you may feel a whole lot better by swapping...

At What Point Do You Need More?

No matter how hard I plan on pushing things, I’m able to knock out a ride of 30 miles or less without thinking about it too much.  I don’t do any additional preparation, don’t bring extra water, and don’t use any hydration tabs, gels, bloks, or anything else.  But, when I go over that...

Latest and Greatest

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about past discussions I’ve had regarding the latest and greatest cycling gear. I was all fired up and had written a line to sum up my thoughts: “who the *bleep* needs the latest and greatest. Just go ride.” Darryl wrote a post about “must have” cycling...

Inner Discovery

For over three years now, I’ve been sending out a Make it Happen post each Monday…..and what I’ve always thought I was doing was sending out positive, inspiring pieces of writing mixed in with my own thoughts of the world.  Basically I’ve been pumping out self-improvement messages just like many of today’s best sellers and...

Wonderfully Orange Super Bowl Recipe and Party Tips

Are you ready for some football?  I sure am.  You see, I was literally born a Denver Bronco fan.  I had no choice.  I was born into a family that celebrated Bronco games most every Sunday of the season.   Yes, even those Super Bowl Sundays in the late 1980s.  Those were ugly, but...

31 Day Do Good Challenge: Day 30

Just a couple days left in our 31 Day Do Good Challenge.  Whew, it’s been some month huh?  Well, the coolest thing about it is seeing all the good that has been created.  If you’d like to leave a personal message for Rob Greenfield you can do that in the comments section below. Our...

Let’s Talk About Must Have Cycling Equipment

When it comes to cycling equipment, what do you feel is the bare minimum that every cyclist must have?  With all that is available out there, it’s so easy to get caught up and over-stock yourself with things you don’t end up using…..or not benefiting from.  So where do you draw the line? It’s...

31 Day Do Good Challenge: Day 29

If you followed Rob Greenfield’s ride for sustainability last summer, you would have seen the extreme side of water conservation.  During his 104 days of cycling across the United States, Rob used just 160 gallons of water…the average American uses 80 to 100 gallons per day. So where did the 160 gallons of water...

Tipping Point

I have this problem, a decision problem. You see, when I decide to go out for a ride, it’s often not the first time I’ve decided it. I usually have an internal argument on whether I should and want to ride that goes on for awhile, sometimes until it’s too late, and the decisions...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
