Beach Therapy

There’s no therapy like Beach Therapy…..yeah, that coming from a guy who grew up in the land locked province of Saskatchewan. I’ve always had the ocean in my soul and absolutely believe in living with the sand beneath my toes, but for most of my life I’ve lived outside of this reality.  But now...

Monday Can Be Easy Like Sunday Morning

Mondays seem to have a bad wrap.  So many people wake up with the “oh man, it’s Monday” attitude and need an extra kick or nudge to get going. This is one of the reasons we came up with our “Make it Happen” Monday posts.  They are intended to help get any of you...

Eaten Up By Grenada

I’ve been riding a road bike for about ten years now, but it wasn’t until moving to Grenada that I’ve totally felt eaten up by the road and related conditions. Yeah, I’ve cycled in many different parts of the world and experienced a few issues along the way.  But here in Grenada, my bike,...

Are You a Piler or Filer?

Are You a Piler or Filer?

The terminology of Piler vs Filer might be mostly used to describe personality traits or organizational skills, but I think it can be applied to cycling as well. It all began when I was building Lego with my 7 year old Son.  I had all the little pieces organized in bags so that he...

My Definition of Success

What is your personal definition of success…….both for cycling and life? If you don’t have a personal definition I greatly suggest you getting one.  By knowing exactly what it takes for you to consider your life a success, you need to have a way to measure or determine it. It all comes down to...

Families are Making it Happen…Every Day

Each and every day….all around the world…..Families are in motion.  It honestly amazes me how on a daily basis a Family can get themselves ready, get the kids off to school, and the Parents to work…..all the while never missing a beat. Add in some personal time for cycling, or other activity and all...

The Enthusiastically Depressed Cyclist

The Enthusiastically Depressed Cyclist

A couple weeks ago, I bared my soul and talked about feeling like a fake.  It was all about how I’ve felt bummed out and a bit of a downer lately.  I received some great comments and words of encouragement, and I appreciate all you had to say. But there was more to the...

The Un-Explainable Feeling

The Un-Explainable Feeling

Last Monday I called myself a fake, even though I am a person who goes after what he wants….and I generally have a Do it Now attitude. Yes, I go after many of the things I want.  But at the same time, I seem to always be chasing my number one goal in life....

I’m a Fake

I’m a Fake

Well, not totally a fake…..but a fake none-the-less.  I come out here every Monday with a “Make it Happen” post intended to motivate and inspire all of you.  But in reality, it’s often me who needs an attitude adjustment more than anyone. I guess you could call it ironic.  On one hand I feel...

Always Move in the Direction of Opportunity

One of my cycling industry buddies recently told me about a huge change their family was contemplating, and what my thoughts were on it.  To me it sounded like one incredible adventure, but would require them to move and make a pretty big change to their accustomed lifestyle.  The best advice I could give...

The Birthday Ride

The Birthday Ride

Every time I see that it’s someone’s birthday, I’ll usually post my wishes to them on social media and ask if they’re getting out for a birthday ride.  I also asked about this when I hosted #bikeschool a few weeks ago to find out what sort of cycling rituals people had on their...

What is Paradise?

June 10, 2013

What is Paradise?

Because I live in the Caribbean, I’m often told that I’m living in paradise.  Oh, and having a bicycle tour/rental company along with all of this makes it sound even more paradise-ish.  But what exactly constitutes the creation of paradise? Looking in from the outside, living in a place like this definitely creates the...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
