Paying It Forward

I gave away this bike on Saturday.  Although it looks like an ordinary bike, this one was something special. This bike was therapist, friend, life preserver, and constant companion for the better part of a year.  It was the reason to get out of bed in the morning and something to look forward to...

The Proactive Cyclist

Living in a country with a definite reactionary culture can be challenging…..especially when you’re a proactive type person. Yeah, I’m not perfect but I definitely lean towards the approach of doing things now to avoid having issues in the future.  It’s just how I’m wired and probably has something to do with being raised...

#bikeschool Turns 3

Yesterday marked the three year anniversary of #bikeschool.  When @bikerly first mentioned the idea of #bikeschool to me, I never would have imagined it would grow to what it’s become today.  Back then, twitter chats were scarce and many people didn’t even understand them…..and many still don’t today.  But those who jumped in (and continue to jump) have...

The Rainy Season

There’s something about riding in the rain that I’ve always loved. Nevermind the slick roads, wet chamois and the need to clean the bike as soon as you get home, riding in the rain can be peaceful and at the same time exhilarating. The thought that I HTFU and rode when others didn’t confirms...

Road Rage

Early Saturday morning I had an encounter with an SUV on a stretch of Elston Avenue.  Although Elston has long sections of protected bike lanes, this portion doesn’t have them.  However, it’s a fairly wide street and at that time of the morning, has very little traffic. You develop a sixth sense riding in...

When You’re Too Cheap For Bicycle Accessories

Bicycle parts and accessories can be quite expensive….but you don’t always have to spend the cash as long as you’re not embarrassed about looking cheap. Yeah, I’m definitely known as Mr. Frugal….aka Mr. Cheap even when it comes to spending money on my bikes.  It’s not that I have a problem with spending money, it’s just...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
