It doesn’t matter if you’re a cycling competitor, commuter, or just plain like to ride a bike….if you’re Loving the Bike then I think you’re cool for many reasons. Cool because you’re doing something for your health, the environment, and for the beauty that comes from being on a bike. Odds are that you’re...

Tina Turner
As you know, I’m primarily a road cyclist. It’s what I love the most, and what I spend the majority of my riding time on. But there are times when I want to commute somewhere or get out riding with the kids, so I need something for that as well. My secondary bike has...

How Do I Train Over Winter?
I’ve had a lot of people ask me about training over the winter, so today’s post comes right out of the old mailbag. It’s that time of year where many cyclists are forced off the road and driven to their basements to put in time on the trainer. Have you seen some of the...

Cycling – Across Canada Style
I’ve never cycle toured before, but I sure would like to one day. To get a taste for what it’s like, today I am posting a story by Maximillian Birkner who did a 9,000km ride across Canada this past summer. I got home from Afghanistan in May and two weeks later I left to...

This Post Might Save Your Bike’s Life
Last week I was lucky enough to knock a couple items off my #cyclingwishlist (like, literally). As I’m sure is the case for many of you, my list is pretty long….and it’s always so exciting when I’m able to make them a reality. Ever since I got rid of my hitch mount bike rack, I’ve...

Confessed Anti-Cyclist Starts Loving the Bike
There was an interesting story in The Standard online newspaper last week. I didn’t find it myself, but my friend Victor from Bicycle Lab pointed it out to me saying it would make a great post for my site. David “Fred” Serra, a former footballer from Australia, never would have imagined wearing lycra….but his...

Look Who’s Loving the Bike – November 2010
My friend, Cristi, from CyclingDomestique.com told me she was going to be interviewing Ben Day of the FlyVAustralia/ Pegasus Racing team, and wondered if there was anything I’d like for her to ask him. I told her to find out what is was that caused him to start Loving the Bike. Here is the...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration
Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea). I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean ”lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.
My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.
Answer:
Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out. Have you tried either of these? Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
