Question: Hi Kelli, I eat a lot of protein bars for energy and nutrition.  Is there a certain bar that you recommend over the others? Kelli’s Answer: To answer your question, I’m going to explain why I believe “whole-food bars,” such as “LARA” and “KIND” bars (mock-KIND bar recipe found right here), are good...

Win a Pair of Cycling Sunglasses

As I’ve been known to say in the past….“My Momma tells me I was born with a pair of sunglasses on my face”.  Yep, I honestly can’t remember too many days in my life when I wasn’t sporting a pair while cycling or doing anything else outside. So you just have to know that...

Loving the BITE: Basil Cauliflower Soup

As the weather turns a little cooler, I often begin to crave those cold-weather comfort foods that seem to warm up the whole house on a cold day.  Foods like stews, soups, and chili come to mind.  Since summer’s officially come to an end, let’s look on the bright side and warm up with...

The Einstein Vibe

I’ve always found it quite interesting that good old Albert Einstein rode a bike…..and tossed out a few great cycling quotes along the way.  He was a brilliant man and I’m so very proud to have him as a fellow cyclist. I’ve found myself leaning on him for support lately in the way of...

Snooze or RIDE

Snooze or RIDE - Guest post by Dave Boyd As I rolled out of my one successful track stop for the day and got back up to speed, a guy in his pressed white dress shirt (We’ll pretend it was pressed. I couldn’t really tell) driving a silver Toyota Avalon yelled out his passenger...

#bikeschool: Showering With Your Helmet?

It all started with a harmless discussion about what to do after you finish a ride.  This discussion took place on the Cycling360 Podcast with myself and Rob suggesting that someone can take their helmet into the shower with them to rinse it off.  Victor, being the wild man that he is, laughed at...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
