Summer Moak 2015

(Summer Moak and Chloe Dygert, after winning the USA Cycling Time Trial in Lake Tahoe, Ca.) PC: Nicola Cranmer. Chloe will be representing the USA at the Jr. World Championships in Richmond, VA. late this month.

2 National titles, 3 National Records, and a trip to the emergency room (luckily only suffered some road rash) = another very successful 2015 racing season! But all good things must come to an end, which can only mean one thing……………………it’s the OFF-SEASON!!!

The previous 2 years I’ve raced Cyclocross during the off-season and even though it was tons of fun (and totally hard), I never felt like I got a break. You start out with road, then track, and straight to cross with maybe a week or two to recharge in between. So….after discussing my 2016 goals with my coach and parents, we decided against racing Cyclocross competitively this season. The races I will participate in will be strictly be for fun and laughs, without any expectations – which is what it originally started out as. It will be the first time since I can remember that I don’t have a detailed schedule/workout, and I’m thrilled!!!

This doesn’t mean I’m going to sit on the sofa eating ice cream, getting out of shape. That’s the thing, there are so many things I want to see and do. I’m planning to ride my bike when and where I want, without having to stay within a certain power range. I’m looking forward to going on long hikes without worrying if my legs will be sore the next day. I can stay up late watching movies and sleep in like “normal” teenagers do. I’m going to spend a lot more time doing Yoga and swimming in the ocean. I’m hoping to do some sightseeing and go on my first ever camping trip. Not only will this give my body a break, but it will give my mind the mental break it needs so I’ll be ready and focused for the upcoming season.

Enjoy Your Ride

Enjoy your mental rest, it’ll boost up your battery. And if the sofa and ice cream catch you a couple of times enjoy that too, see it as part of the winding down process.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
