BikeWrappers: Reflective and Removable System For Your Bike

The BikeWrappers reflective system is neat alternative to making your bike more visible for night rides and commuting.  Brent Thomas has been an avid cyclist for years and in an effort to keep himself and other riders safe, he created BikeWrappers.  He’s also giving a couple sets away, so check the bottom of this post for details.

I try to limit reviews to products that I feel a need for trying out myself and that will provide value for our readers.  I presently don’t do a lot of riding in dark conditions so at first I wasnt’ so sure about giving BikeWrappers a try.  But I’m glad that Brent sent me some because they’re actually quite neat and can easily be taken on and off.

As the name implies, BikeWrappers wrap around the frame of your bike making it reflective from every angle.  I see the value in this because having lights will make you visible from the front and back….but not the side.  Including the Wrappers to your safety mix enables you and your bike to be seen no matter where a car is coming from.

The BikeWrappers come in a bunch of different colors and styles so they can be left on if you want to jazz up your bike, or taken off and only used when necessary.  Because they are fabric, a commuter can toss them in their backpack and put them on whenever they find themselves riding home at dusk or in the dark.

There are a ton of small business out there making products and accessories for bikes, but I think Brent has something valid here.  He’s even caught the attention of CNN and was featured on their “Start Small, Think Big” series.

    This is an excellent idea! I’ve started to ride at nights since that’s the only time I have and I’ve been looking for something like this. I was considering reflective tape but didn’t want something permanent on my bike. This looks excellent

    I would love to win a set for commuting. With my new job a mile from my house, I really want to focus on commuting year-round, including using the bike to get groceries, etc. A set of these would really go a long way in making sure folks can see me on my early morning and late night rides.

    I am a light night commuter and am often riding after midnight. I usually wear a hi-vis vest, but sometimes find it does not always provide adequate safety if I am wearing a back pack. I would love to win a set of these.

    I’m a morning rider, and it’s getting darker every day. My main route to access good riding is on a road that goes between a cement plant and a couple quarries, so I’m constantly barraged by speeding trucks during my departure and return. I’m always looking for ways to be seen! I’m currently using lights on my bike and helmet, reflective tape on my shoes, and bright colored clothes. These wrappers would be a great way to keep me visible!

    I use my bicycle as my main form of transportation and commute in an urban environment. I leave for work before dawn and often run errands after sunset. I have plenty of lights pointing forward and back, and the wrappers would be a terrific complement to my “night-bike” set-up!

    Every Thursday night in Austin Tx., I ride with about 200 – 300 other cyclists (depending on the weather) around the city and end up at a friendly bar for adult bevs.
    Wrapping my bike with reflective material would be sweet and I would stand less a chance of getting hit by another cyclist. And I could advertise for you. Think of the possibilities. :)

    I would love to win a set of these for my husband. He’s commuting to work on his bike, and he’s leaving when it’s still REALLY dark outside. I want him to be safe. These sound like exactly what he needs. (Well, and a better lamp, so he can see the road more clearly.) I wouldn’t use them, because right now, I’m riding a trail, and don’t need them as much.

    I bicycle 24/7/365 and would really like a set of these for riding Hwy 34 at night!!! Being a thrifty person (although girlfriends say I am cheap), I would much prefer to have a free set!

    Darryl – what an awesome product and great idea Brent put together. Training for a 70.3 Fall race with a 2-year old in TX makes things pretty challenging. The only time the weather is cool and the baby is asleep is early morning for those longer mid-week rides. 30-40 miles on the trainer while safe – is not very safe for my sanity – so I’m out at 4:30 a.m. riding. Just this week a car decided to not stop at a 4-way stop sign to my right and I know he couldn’t see me as I was already in the intersection and he was looking at me broadside.
    These wrappers would be a great solution to that problem. Thanks for all you do Darryl (and Brent!)

    that looks pretty cool! I commute in the dark a fair amount of the time especially in the winter, so it seems like a bike wrapper would help my visibility that much more. I agree with Brandon, you just can’t overdo visibility!

    Most of my rides are early morning rides at around 5:30, so I ride in the dark a lot. I have lights for the front and back and a screaming yellow jersey with reflective highlights, but at that time of the morning, you really can’t overdo visibility. I’d love a set of these.

    I’m not sure about this product but I would like to test it out for myself. With the reflectors I have on my pedals and front and back of bike along with my front and rear lights I think I’m about as visible as I can be. However, you can never be too visible so I’m interested in this product.

    My commuting MUT is knocked out for construction of a bridge that passes over it. Consequently, I have to ride a four lane divided highway for about a mile. It’s definitely the hairiest part of my commute.

    A great idea! I commute year round. I have not once seen another commuter on my route, and the lack of bikes seen regularly along there shows in how the drivers react. Many of them don’t seem to register my presence at all. Anything to be more visible makes me feel a bit safer. I also like the idea of something that can be removed and switched between bikes – I am loathe to put stickers on my bikes – even reflective stickers.

    Survey is the first in and the last out. So I come and go from the office in the dark and with fall and winter coming it’ll only happen more. Anything to be more visible while being less obtrusive on my ride would be great!

    They have arm warmers too!! I lead several EARLY group rides on the3 weekends and even though we may be a group of 5 to 25 on any morning – any way to “light” us up is a great idea as we always roll early to “beat the heat”.

    When you commute as often as I do on my bike you need all the help you can get for the car drivers to see me. These may help me to stay alive in the dark winter months here in the UK. Even if I don’t win a set I will definitely buy a set.

    I’ve been commuting and randonneurring for 4 years now. Most hi viz clothing for cyclists sucks. If it meets my visibility expectations it’s uncomfortable or if it’s light and comfy then it easily covered when a belt slips or I slip on my hydration pack. Would love to try this out.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean ”lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
