#Coffeemates – Fitness Coffee Review

I haven’t been as big a part of it as I’d like, but thanks to my Twitter friend @marijolamarche there is a great group of people who meet up for some good chatting pretty much every morning. Marijo coined the Twitter Hashtag, #Coffeemates and it’s become a place where cyclists (and non-cyclists) can chillax together over a coffee.  It’s a great name and includes some amazing people.

In honor of my #coffeemates, I’m doing a review of a product called Fitness Coffee today.  A little while back @fitness_coffee started following me on Twitter and when I replied back to thank them for the follow, I mentioned that their product sounded interesting.  Next thing you know, a package of their brew arrived in the mail.

I’ve actually become more of a tea drinker than a coffee addict over the past couple years, but I still enjoy a hit of coffee a couple times a week.  The idea of ingesting things like Yerba Mate, Ginger, Cardamum, Lemon Vervain, Chinese Star Anise, Termeric, and a whack of other benefiting natural supplements along with my coffee sounded great to me so I was excited to give it a try.

As you know, I like to be 100% honest with my comments on this site so I have to give you the real deal here.  I’m suffice to say that the taste didn’t quite do it for me.  You know how when you’re drinking coffee and sometimes the first sip tastes a little off….and then after a couple more sips it starts to taste fine? Well, it didn’t happen as I sipped my Fitness Coffee.  It’s not their fault…I think it’s pretty hard to make things like Yerba Mate and Termeric taste good.

Now, I love what the people behind Fitness Coffee are doing and I think it’s very cool that they have created a product that puts a big shot of goodness into everyone’s favorite morning drink. Unfortunately it tasted a little like someone slipped some cough medicine into my brew and try as I might…I could only chug back about 3/4 of a cup.

But this is just me and my tastebuds here.  Yours might be different.  If you’re ever able to sample it, I would recommend that you go for it and see what you think.  There is no denying the benefits it provides the body….as long as you can convince your tastebuds to get it that far.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
