Helium Lazer Helmet Review

2012

Not only do I have my review of the Helium Lazer helmet today, I also have details on how you can win one of your own.  Be sure to check out my thoughts and opinions as well as the video about what I think of this cycling helmet.

I have been in serious need of a new helmet for some time now, and after soliciting suggestions from my Cycling 360 buddies (Victor and Rob), I knew that the Helium from Lazer Sports was the one I should be getting.  Through the magic of social media and the great connections I have over at Google +, I was able to get in contact with Chris Smith from Lazer Sports and hook myself up with one of their helmets.  Actually, I did one better….I’ve asked them to hook you up with one as well.

There really is only one reason we all wear helmets, and that’s to protect our melons.  But along with that, most cyclists are looking for something light, comfortable, good looking….and, of course, something that helps out our performance if possible.

The Helium is Lazer’s top of the line road cycling helmet, but they have a whole whack of other helmet options to match with the type of riding you do and what might suit you best.  Choosing a helmet has a lot to do with personal preference and each brand has their own gadgets and characteristics that make them unique.  Here are some of the features that Lazer offers with their helmets:

The Lazer Rollsys® system: a fully integrated mechanism which surrounds the head completely. By turning a smooth thumb wheel – situated on top of the helmet – the Rollsys® system permits an accurate and progressive peripheral sizing adjustment.

Magic Buckle: I wasn’t sure about the buckle system on the helmet when I first got it, but after riding with it a couple of times I see the beauty in it.  The small magnetic buckle makes it super easy to strap on or off the helmet with one flick of the hand.

X-static®: The padding in the helmet is designed to keep your head cooler when it’s hot and warmer when it’s cold.  Lazer says that the combination of X-static padding and the airpads provide the most efficient method to keep your helmet well ventilated.

Rigidity Brace System: Different models of Lazer helmets have different molded reinforcement structures to improve impact resistance.  In the Helium they use an integrated roll cage for maximum reinforcement.

Okay, so here is my totally honest take on the Helium Lazer Helmet including my pre and post first ride experience:

Final Word:

I totally trust the opinion and recommendations of Victor (@bicyclelab) and Rob (@rgrissom), so I knew I was going to like the Helium before even trying it.  But after checking it out for myself, I have nothing but good things to say about this Lazer Helmet, and feel completely comfortable recommending it to all of you.

Hi Just bought a new 2012 Lazer Helium after my “Katusha Helium” bit the dust after an 45 klm crash.
Both knees/right shoulder/right side of my back and my left hip and left hand all badly bloodied.
I was on an early morning bunch ride, bike Kuota Kom is ok but my front/rear lights now lay where they fell.
But my head and my life is intact thanks to this wonderfull Helmet.Yes,it is beyond repair with numerous cracks and abrasions through the Helmet but it did the job it said it would do and that is all that matters.
Thankyou to Lazer, you have a client for life
    Kind Regards Mark Gresham-Newcastle Australia

Just a Bell “Solar”. Time to upgrade!

  28. Anthony Varney on January 25, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Sadly I’m still using a Giro Monza as a crash took out my good helmet last season so it would definitely be a welcome change. It’d be nice to get rid of the pressure headaches my current helmet gives me.

  29. Aykayem on January 25, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Not sure what brand I wear – was something I got on special at Aldi store (supermarket type place that sells reasonably good stuff) … looks ok, seems to be comfy enough … but I might change my mind about that if I try wearing something top quality like a Helium Lazer instead 😉

  30. Jessi on January 25, 2012 at 5:43 pm

I currently have a Limar Ultralight Pro but I’ve been wanting a Lazer for a while. I lost the adjustment wheel on the back of my Limar and customer service never got back to me about replacing it.

I also have a Bern but only use it on the coldest days here in Mpls.

  31. Jamie Siegrist on January 25, 2012 at 5:30 pm

Right now I’m wearing a Giro Surface winter helmet because it gets cold here in Minneapolis. During spring, summer, and fall I have Giro Hex that I wear, but noticed a crack so I will be in the market for a new one come spring.

  32. Liz Q on January 25, 2012 at 4:56 pm

I’m wearing an old Bell that really needs replacing. Would love to win, and  I followed all accounts/pages etc . I did not do the spam part however sorry,  people complain to much and i loose friends

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on January 25, 2012 at 5:25 pm

No problemo, Liz…..we’ll still include those as entries into the Helium giveaway.  Good Luck.

      • Liz Q on January 26, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Excellent! My helmet is rather old and cracked looking, i have long  lusted after a new one :/

  33. Bikeboy999 on January 25, 2012 at 4:27 pm

Hey, I normally wear a Go Pro and Dinotte light system on my helmet. Is there any way that the review could show attaching lights or cameras, using velcro straps.  Not every ride is a fast one.  🙂  Daddy Pinata.

  34. Zach Jacob on January 25, 2012 at 3:55 pm

Not sure… I wear a Bell something or other. It’s a cheapy, so this would be an upgrade for sure!

  35. Valerie Theberge on January 25, 2012 at 3:18 pm

I very old Louis Garneau helmet.

  36. BobS on January 25, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I wear a Giro Ionos, it is my second Giro and I really like it, light and comfortable.

  37. Antoine RJ Wright on January 25, 2012 at 3:06 pm

I have no clue what helmet I have; but after my big accident this summer, I know I need a new one. Here’s hoping that I win one.

    I have a Giro Atoms and I hate it…

  46. Andrea (@psyclechick) on January 25, 2012 at 9:53 am

I just bought a Kask K.50 Evo – fit is pretty good overall but I find it can cause a bit of a pressure headache on a longer rides due to the way the rear support/adjuster is – although that could be due to a slightly fatter head 😉 (helmet was fitted to me in the bike shop however)

  47. Koifla on January 25, 2012 at 9:13 am

I have a Giro aero avantage2 very hot.

  48. Derek on January 25, 2012 at 8:57 am

I’m currently wearing a specialized but love the look of the Lazer.

  49. Keith Edmiston on January 25, 2012 at 8:00 am

  50. Matthew Doyle on January 25, 2012 at 7:59 am

As with many, running Specialized Echelon as my first “serious” road helmet.  Thanks for the review as the Echelon is nearing the end of its service life.  Love the podcast and keep it up.

Thanks for dropping by Loving the Bike, and good to have you as a @cycling360:disqus listener as well.

  51. Jessy Diamond on January 25, 2012 at 7:47 am

My current helmet is a cheap department store helmet. It will do the job where it counts, but it is poorly ventilated and not really comfy. I could really use a better helmet.

  52. Craig Clark on January 25, 2012 at 7:44 am

A Bell Sweep is what I currently wear.

  53. Ben on January 25, 2012 at 7:41 am

  55. Anonymous on January 25, 2012 at 6:19 am

I currently wear a Limar, but it could use a replacement…

  56. BarkEater77 on January 25, 2012 at 6:03 am

I’m in a Bern Watts Hardhat at present. Bought it for skiing but it was pressed into cycle duty.

  57. BrennanAnnie on January 25, 2012 at 6:00 am

A good helmet makes all the difference. Mine rubbed my beck raw in the aqua velo last year. To be fair my wetsuit had started the rub but still.

    Kask Vertigo

  59. Marty @twittyboyd on January 25, 2012 at 5:58 am

I wear a FOX helmet, now. Would love to win this one because if Darryl, Victor, and Rob recommend, it must be good! 😉

  60. Andrew_scully on January 25, 2012 at 5:57 am

I wear a Specialised s-works, after splitting my last lid in 3 during a crash in the peloton last May. Ouch!

  61. Mike Neifert on January 25, 2012 at 5:40 am

i presently wear a bell sweep xc. really like it, but would love to give this new one a whirl.

  62. Mark Beaconsfield on January 25, 2012 at 5:24 am

What! No baseball bats!!!! Hahahaha, just kidding. I currently wear a cheap department store bought helmet. I would love a better quality helmet, but unfortunately can’t afford one at the moment. Here in Australia, helmets are compulsory for all cyclists. A Lazer helmet is just what I need.

    • Darryl is Loving the Bike on January 25, 2012 at 8:14 am

Hahaha, I just might have to do a follow up review with video of me as the Daddy Pinata.

  63. Richard moss on January 25, 2012 at 5:17 am

Specialized echelon. Could do with an update…

  64. Wynnabah on January 25, 2012 at 5:12 am

I’ve got a Specialized Echelon at the moment, horrible heavy thing I’ve had a for a few years.  Was my first Road helmet as it goes.  Padding is a little tired, terrible hot spots even during the winter and it looks a little like a minion from the Mushroom Kingdom!

HOWEVER, I have just (yesterday in fact) purchased a Rudy Project Sterling lid with some left over Christmas money I had, lucky me.  I will endeavor to inform you all of it’s pros and cons after my ride on Saturday.

  65. Hazey_B on January 25, 2012 at 5:09 am

Currently wear Lazer 02 helmet…love it but need a new one!

  66. josh morris on January 25, 2012 at 5:06 am

Marvelous. I’m riding with a MET Forte at the moment.

  67. Tim Starry on January 25, 2012 at 4:57 am

I’m curious to see testing data on how effective that “magic buckle” is when subjected to crash forces.

    • Tim Starry on January 25, 2012 at 4:57 am

you know, because helmets are about protecting the melon and not about being cool, fashionable or convenient

      • Darryl is Loving the Bike on January 25, 2012 at 8:13 am

Thanks Tim….it would be nice to see the testing data from the buckle.  It is as strong as any other buckle system I’ve seen, and I’m hoping they would have done some serious testing with it before releasing it.  I’ll check with Chris and see if they have any.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
