Emphasize the fun factor. People don't have to get a road bike or commuter to do good. I encourage people to buy a cheap cruiser and use it for short trips (grocerie shore, book shop). They're enjoyable to ride, get people moving, and lessen gas use. It's a great way to get a nervous person started.

I lead a beginner group on weekly rides, we start at a low mileage, Learn about how & when to shift along with riding in traffic. Many beginner group rides start at too high of a mileage for people to feel comfortable attending them. Hopefully next year with teaming up with a friend we can double our numbers (of course that's if I didn't get the job at the Grand Canyon.)
