Give us your suggestions of how we can get more people out on bikes, and win one of these cycling t-shirts with a fantastic message.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by the guys over at Ban-T Shirts and asked if I’d like one of their new bicycle themed shirts.  I’d actually seen the design floating around social media and definitely thought it was something I’d like to wear.

It seems like all I ever wear is cycling t-shirts, and although I love being a walking billboard for the bike…..I’m also quite particular about which ones I put on.  A t-shirt has to be totally comfortable and feel good in order for me to wear it on a regular basis.  It can be the most super cool bicycle shirt ever, but if it doesn’t feel right I won’t wear it.

That fact is often a worry of mine when a new shirt is in the mail, but when this one arrived I was very happy with the fit and I’ve added it to my rotation.  As for what’s on the shirt?  Yeah, it’s pretty cool.  Would you like one of your own?

    How to get more people to ride bikes? Wave and talk to everyone, it’ll naturally turn to riding and why they don’t ride.

    Emphasize the fun factor. People don’t have to get a road bike or commuter to do good. I encourage people to buy a cheap cruiser and use it for short trips (grocerie shore, book shop). They’re enjoyable to ride, get people moving, and lessen gas use. It’s a great way to get a nervous person started.

    I do feel that things are improving, but we have a long way to go. Websites like yours and having all of us on bikes being good role models will help get more people riding bikes.

    I think getting more kids involved in cycling and having them fall in love with it will help create more cyclists in the future.

    I lead a beginner group on weekly rides, we start at a low mileage, Learn about how & when to shift along with riding in traffic. Many beginner group rides start at too high of a mileage for people to feel comfortable attending them. Hopefully next year with teaming up with a friend we can double our numbers (of course that’s if I didn’t get the job at the Grand Canyon.)

    Cool shirt. I’m always sharing with people the benefits of cycling and how it can make your life better. We all need to promote bikes like this and more people will start riding.

    I encourage people by leading by example. I let them know by way of facebook (BethelStrong) and Twitter (@takeabike). They will see me riding and having fun, plus seeing how it help my health. They will honk, wave or stop me to talk. I can’t tell you how many people I have encouraged to start riding by just talking about it. Let them know the health benifits, the fun and not a better way to see the city you live in. I tell them that you don’t have to be able to out ride anyone, just ride and have fun.

    Cycled a lot when I was a bit younger and loved it!!! Would love to start again here in Grenada but honestly the driving styles of the guys is scary. Educate the bus/truck/car drivers and you might see many more ppl on their bikes 😉

    When I decided to make a change in my life, the bicycle is where I looked. On it, I was able to find resolve and strength I never believed I had. In the few thousand miles I’ve ridden since, the best way I’ve found to get people to ride is just to ride myself and let them see how happy it makes me feel & how much better I look. Let me drop a deep thought of mine on you, Words move emotions, Action moves mountains, now RIDE!

    I would really like to see more people riding bikes. In the city its difficult to get more people biking because of the distance to commute to work, the dangerous roads, and the fact that many people don’t want to show up sweaty to work. Having cities and businesses set up things to make it easier for people to ride bikes to work would help a lot.

    I think we should be more open and encouraging to newer cyclists. Inviting them to join a ride is great and helping them to find resources for information!

    I think people need to be motivated first. If there is no motivation, nothing will get them on a bike. If they dont have one, nothing motivates more than a new bike, and the thought that you just spent his money on something, now you MUST use it! A common complaint I hear from people with bikes that dont use them is that they are not comfortable on them. I always suggest they go to a bike shop and get a fit on their bike. They will be more comfortable and more inclined to ride. I also make riding a family activity. Everyone wins, and its hard to say no to the kids when they want to go for a ride, even if I am getting back from a 50 mile ride with the team.

    It would be great if employers and local businesses would get together and organize a ” bike to work” day to encourage more people to bike to work!

    I love to ride the off road trails. We have a lot of great ones locally to choose from. I was recently thinking it would be a great idea to contact the local youth group and talk to them about starting a bike club for the youth. This would get more young people on bikes, out on the trails, and actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle. If youth groups and/or schools all around started doing this we could start an epidemic for the generations that will follow us!

    Building off that idea below, I’ve heard of some cities that encourage a Commuter Benefits Program where you can deduct pretax dollars for commuting needs. It is supposed to encourage using pubic transportation or carpooling, all of which is great to the environment. The eligible expenses should be expanded to include buying a bike, new gear, clothing, etc… ! I’m not sure of the full details, but here is a link for the law in place in NYC http://www.nyc.gov/html/opa/html/transportation_benefits/commuter-benefit-program-overview.shtml

    Other good ways to get your hesitant friends on a bike are to suggest riding with them!!!

      For myself personally, I am already an avid road cyclist and love being on the bike, but anytime you drop some dough$$$ on an awesome new component or piece of gear for your bike there is just a crazy feeling to get out there and put it to use!

    Companies, especially those located in inner cities, should allow employees who commute by bike to punch out 15 minutes early. If I owned a company I would promote this, plus I would provide a safe place for employees to secure their bikes/gear.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
