Flip-Flopping the Ride


Although I’m a lover of all types of bikes….I’d consider myself to be a road cyclist first and foremost.  I love the speed, the distance, and all the good stuff that comes from a road ride.

Sure, I also love getting out on my mountain bike and ripping through trails….and if I had a cruiser, I would totally love to slow it down for a cool and easy ride.

If I was just a couple years younger, I’d be out there attempting insane half pipe tricks on a BMX…..and would most definitely like to be checking out what all the cross bike buzz is all about.  But no matter, road cycling would be my number one.

Flip Flopping the Ride

Okay, back the beginning.  I’m a cyclist who’s weekly rides have primarily consisted of the road variety for as long as I can remember.  For the past few months I’ve been mixing in a mountain bike ride at least once per week, but still 90% of my riding has been on my road bike.  Until now.

We opened the doors to our Mocha Spoke café on June 3, and my life has been flip-flopped both on and off the bike.  I went from being a guy who has worked from home for the past 5 years, to now spending 10+ hours a day at the café.

But the biggest change of all has been that I’m now on my mountain bike more than my road bike.  I commute by bike and am usually carrying a load of stuff with me….so the mtb just makes more sense.  Don’t get me wrong, being on any bike is awesome….but I miss my road bike so much.

I keep telling myself that this is temporary and that flip-flopping the ride is just going to make me a stronger road cyclist.  So until I can work those daily road rides back into my life, I’ll do my best to enjoy the fact that I’m still on a bike…..and will cherish each and every road ride I take.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.


Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
