For me, it is just the easiest way to get around. Cities are crowded. Parking is expensive. I struggled for a long time on public transportation, which never runs on schedule, but resisted getting a bike for a long time because I have a small apartment and nowhere to store it. But that all changed last year when I got a folding bike (it seems so obvious, doesn't it?).
I ride to challenge myself. I ride for fun. I ride to get to work and to get home. I ride to see, hear, smell, feel, and experience the world in a way I never can when I drive in a car. Sometimes I ride to wash out my brain. The rhythmic and continuous turning of the cranks is like turning a key in a lock and opening the door to let out the worry and pent up feelings of the day. I ride because I can. I ride because I love it.
