World Bike Costs

Sure, the price tag on a fancy new road bike can be pretty steep….but we all know how it is so worth it, right?  But the price of bikes got me to thinking….How does the price of my bike compare to what it costs other people around the world to buy that same bike?

With certain bike models being sold with different components in different locations, it’s a little tough to compare apples to apples.  But for each Country, we tried to get pricing of similar components for each of the same model.  Below is the average cost and availability of three different 2011 bike models (Trek Madone 5.9Specialized Tarmac Pro, and Moots YBB 26).

(Prices listed in US dollars and in lowest to highest in price)

Trek Madone 5.9 (Ultegra/Dura-Ace components)

United States – $3,990US

Canada – $4,600US

Australia – $5,250US

Japan – $5,650US

United Kingdom – $5,875

Czech Republic – $5,980US

St. Kitts, West Indies – $6,500US

Tarmac Pro (SRAM components)

United States – $4,400US

Canada – $5,075US

Australia – $5,700US

United Kingdom – $5,875US

Czech Republic -$6,105US

Japan – $6,425US

St. Kitts, West Indies – $7,450US

Moots YBB 26

United States – $7,150US

Canada – $7,400US

Australia – $8,000US

United Kingdom – $4,350US (Frame Only)

St. Kitts, West Indies – Unavailable

These prices should be fairly accurate and I would like to thank the following people for their help in obtaining this information:

That is a great comparison. I love that you putted some list of prices from different countries. I also thanks my cousin’s garage for making me a bike.

This is why I buy my bikes from some guy’s garage.

I knew I forgot something. Next time I’ll include Uncle Vinny’s Garage in the mix as well.

This is great information. It illustrates why I try and get my bike stuff from the States especially with the dollar close to parity.

Yeah, it’s hard to believe that the two countries are so close and the prices so different.

would be interesting to see wha the same bikes cost in south africa and be converted into local currency.

I’ll look for a way to get local prices in South Africa and include them in the mix next time.

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
