Let’s Talk About What It’s Like

We’re back with another segment in our “Let’s Talk” series of posts and this time around we’re talking about how you’d explain what it’s like to ride a bike to someone who’s never seen or ridden a bike in their lives.

I’ve really been loving the response and comments we get from all of you in our Let’s Talk posts and this series was started as something that brings in as much from our readers as possible.  So once again, it’s your turn.  Watch the quick video and listen to how I would describe cycling to someone who’s never been able to experience it before….and then help create this post by adding your comments, pictures, or video.  Thanks in advance for your help on this one.

    I think it’s like a roller coaster. That you have to power. You KNOW if you suck it up and pedal up that hill, you can jet down on that razor’s edge of exhilaration, hanging on for dear life, and GIGGLING deep in your soul.

    What it’s Like to Ride a Bike?

    As a child, your world begins to unfold
    Expanding your imagination, extending your geography
    Building your confidence, making you bold

    As an adult,  the reverence of youth’s passion and fire
    Fanning the flames, adding more fuel
    Reteaching,  you CAN accomplish anything you desire

    Young or old, one thing will always be the same
    Life will test you, try you push you to the edge
    Well prepared are you though, from the bike lane

    Endurance, strength, stamina and sustain
    Freedom, joy, happiness and yearning for more
    Common to all, from the bike lane

    Experience is the only way, for sure to know
    Adjectives, metaphors and similes are nice
    What’s it like to ride a bike?  Hop on two wheels and go.

    Riding a
    bike is complete and total “F..R..E..E..D..O..M!” Pure and simple.
    You can hop on a bike and just go…any where you like. You can ride for fun, exercise,
    competition, or utility (mode of transportation). In the end…it all comes
    down to…riding one of the most efficient machines ever thought of…a bike!

    Riding a bike can have a profound impact on your ability to explore your neighbourhood.  Even if you’re a novice or a child with a small bike, you can cover over 20 Km in just a couple of hours.  All that time, you can stop when you want to look at the flowers, a turtle, a garage sale, buy some groceries or lie in the grass and take a break.  When you’re in a car, especially as a passenger, you have no control and the interesting things just whip by spoiled by the goal to simply reach the destination. Sometimes, when I’m commuting to work I have to remember that I’m on a bike and to enjoy what’s happening around me vs. just using it to get to point B.  Just go cycling on the side streets near your house, up and down, take one then the next.  You’ll notice things that for years have simply passed you by.

    Interesting analogy of relationships and cycling, Darryl. Until recently I’ve been riding a multi-speed bike. The extra parts, and noises that came with them, drove me crazy!

    Then I found ‘Red’ my single speed bike. She’s simple and low maintenance. I’m in love and feel like together we can accomplish anything, despite having only one gear. :)

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean ”lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
