Tina Turner

As you know, I’m primarily a road cyclist.  It’s what I love the most, and what I spend the majority of my riding time on.  But there are times when I want to commute somewhere or get out riding with the kids, so I need something for that as well.

My secondary bike has always been a mountain bike.  I’m not sure why exactly because I don’t really tend to ride on trails at all.  So what I decided to go with this time around was a commuter type bike. Something rugged like a mountain bike, but with thinner tires and a design more conducive to fast riding.  I ended up going with the Rocky Mountain RC10, which they classify as an Urban/Fitness bike.

In last week’s #bikeschool, one of the questions asked was about the names people give their bikes.  I feel like I’m a creative guy, but I’ve never named any of my bikes in the past.  So, with the help of John (aka @thegreenmamba)…my new Rocky Mountain now has a name.  He’s dubbed it “Tina Turner” due to the little mishap I had with the bike before even putting one pedal stroke on it.  You can read about that right here.  John is calling me Ike and referring to my bike as Tina seeing as I gave it quite a beating back there.  (Please don’t take offence to the reasoning behind the new name…and find the humor in it).

Anyway, Tina had her reconstructive surgery and is now back with me (Huge thanks to Jamie and John from Lake Travis Cyclerly).  It’s a sweet bike and I’m looking forward to putting on many miles and good times on this one.  If you’d like to read more about the specifications and technical details of my new RC10, you can check it out at http://www.bikes.com/main+en+01_102+RC_10.html?BIKE=876&CATID=3&SCATID=53.

I’d like to end this post off with one more picture of Tina Turner, as well as a few other bikes that have caught my eye over the past few weeks.  I find pretty much any bike to be a thing of beauty, but these ones stand out just a little bit more.

Sweeeeet!!!! Tina Turner – great bike, great naming story! I agree with @bikerly, however – you need a fixie (or flip-flop single speed). It would be totally “you”! After you get a Madsen or an Xtracycle, of course … lol. Thanks for including my bike, D – always an honor!

Yeah exactly….I’m going to have to start calling myself Morebikes Jr. so that I can start collecting them like you do. I think I’ll get the Madsen next, then the Xtracycle, and the Fixie after that. For now anyway….hahahaha.

i just purchased one of the madsen cargo bikes a month ago. I love it, i have three kids (6,4,and 1). I put all three in it and ride around town doing errands, they love it and it gets me out even more with them. Also unlike my old bike trailer, i can actually talk to them as we ride, because we are right there together. Really a great time, i ordered the front tray rack, so i can let my 6 year old ride and when he gets tired, he climbs in and i strap his bike onto the front rack.

Oh man, I am so jealous. I was really hoping to win one in a contest they just had, but it looks like it didn’t happen. I’ve still got it on my wish list and hope to be a fellow Madsen rider one day soon.

Now here’s where I’d struggle, I’ve never had an original idea in my life! Lack of imagination see, I just call my bikes “Marin”, “Giant” and “Ridgeback.”

Which as they’re my Marin East Peak MTB, my Giant Defy 2 roadbike and my old Ridgeback 704 MTB which I use for bad weather commuting, you can clearly see my point about a lack of imagination!

My poor old Ridgeback is approching her end of days though the dear old soul. We’ve done some pedalling together over the 20 odd years we’ve been an item. MTBing all over the UK, 3 different commutes for different jobs, now she’s coming to the end of the towpath.

I will miss her. Maybe I’ll get her recondtioned over time and hand her down to my lad. Now there’s a thought…

I think your names are fine…..I’m still envious of your nice collection, mate.

I’m feeling left out with you and @morebikes both getting new bikes 😉

I seriously have been thinking about either a mountain bike for winter riding or a city bike (even though I live in the country). I’d love to find a Raleigh 3 speed like I had when I was a kid. I’ve started looking around on Craigslist but not seriously. And then I sort of do want a “fixie”…

I have yet to name either of my bikes. I’d like to. Haven’t figured out what to call them yet. My road bike needs a girl name, I think, and my hybrid probably needs a guy name. Not sure why but so far that’s what they are telling me.

It’s funny how being a cyclist leads to being a collector of bikes, isn’t it? Man, I’d have a garage full if I totally had my way. I hope you find a nice City (Country) bike for yourself soon.

Tina is beautiful. I have named all my bikes and have been caught talking to them once in a while; we’ll save that for another time.
I really enjoy my hybrid ladies for commuting. Right now ‘Dixie’ a Cannondale Badboy has seen a great deal of the Toronto streets and is always up for quick stealthy ride. But when I want some speed and ‘Wow!’ factor, I take out my beautiful fixed gear lady ‘Cindy’. She dances on the tarmac with the grace of a swan and a twinkle in her eye.

Wow, it’s like poetry listening to you talk about your bikes. I sure can’t wait to ride with you one day and the the chance to meet at least one from your collection.

I love Tina! I’m like @bikerly — I call mine Pink. 🙂 I don’t have a name for my mountain bike, but I will be sure to hold her pedal and ask softly.

You’re up on http://www.pamelahutchins.com today, inspiring the masses. Thanks for sharing your words with us!

Nice ride. I have never been one for naming my bikes, but the story behind yours is interesting. Tina has nice legs they say, and yours seems tom follow that meme nicely,

  11. bikerly on November 17, 2010 at 5:36 am

Darryl, I like Tina. And wow are Cassie’s bikes brilliant.

If some of your readers are still working on naming their bike, there are some great suggestions from fellow #bikeschoolers here –> http://bit.ly/axeN6t

My favorite suggestion on how to name your bike (and the one that eventually worked with my Red) came from @blueallez –> “Hold her pedal and ask softly.”

Glad you and Tina are getting along well and that she has recovered from the event.

PS I still think you need a single speed

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
