#bikeschool: Bike Friends

If you read my #bikeschool post from last week you’ll not be surprised to hear that I have not been anywhere near my bike this week and it’s already starting to send me a little bit crazy! I keep seeing guys and gals riding around on all sorts of bikes, not just carbon racers...

#Bikeschool: Novacane Phoenix

I began writing this post in the ‘departure lounge’ waiting room of the local hospital, and if you’re reading this… The British NHS (National Health Service) aint all that bad! You may or may not have noticed that my corner of the internet and social media world has been quite quiet of late and...

It’s been a while since we brought up some of the cool and interesting stories that come up through the #bikeschool hashtag, so here’s another edition of #bikeschool happenings. What do you think about? One of the questions asked by guest professor @koifla at last weeks #bikeschool was “What can you think about that...

The Joys of Finding a Riding Partner

If you haven’t noticed, I don’t have a lot of posts about cycling with partners or groups.  I’m primarily a solo cyclist, so when Mike Neifert came to me with a guest post on “The Joys of Finding a Riding Partner” I was stoked to get it up and include some content on this...

#bikeschool: To Pro or not to Pro

May 1, 2012
By

As I’ve said before, I’m a cycle race fan.  Whether it be pro or local amateur racing, I like watching/reading/learning and would say a great deal of my love of cycling has come from watching professional racing and I try to imitate a lot of that in my training, style and biking ‘image’.  You...

#bikeschool: The Recovery Dance

April 17, 2012
By

No I have not gone bonkers and taken up Rhythmic BMX Dance for London 2012. Nor have I been practicing my fixie-hops from the film ‘Quicksilver’ (although I have added the video to the end of this post as an extra special treat!) I want to disclose a personal secret to you all today....

#bikeschool: 10 down, 20 to go

We are already a third of the way through #30daysofbiking and Team #LovingTheBike is ‘performing’ really well. As one of the team Road Captains I thought it would only be proper and correct to sing your praises and try to raise the morale even higher with a run down of some of the last...

#bikeschool: Transitions

March 27, 2012
By

No, not those kind of transitions… But forgive me for using this picture of the ‘Mark Cavendish Shadow’, Tyler Farrar. It was not purely to make a cheap and frankly rubbish joke about the title of this post. It’s more about conveying how I’ve been feeling about my fitness and cycling recently and how...

#bikeschool: Education for the mastiffs

March 20, 2012
By

Having put down some decent winter miles I’m now commuting to work by bike almost every day now the weather is a little nicer. Due to the increase in mileage I’m doing along cycle paths I’ve realised there is a cultural divide between cyclists and dog walkers. I’ve had my fair share of ‘incidents’...

#bikeschool: Cycling as a World Financial Booster

If everyone rode bikes, would the World be free from economic issues?  I’m no financial expert, but I sure would love to give it a try and see what happens. With all the great work Stevie does over here with the weekly #bikeschool posts, we’re giving him the day off so that I can...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
