Make it Happen Monday: Two Wheels, Fast Feet

It’s kids week over here at Loving the Bike, and each and every post will be focused around the Two Wheels, Fast Feet program that we’re launching today.

Growing up, the beginning of June was always my favorite time of the whole year.  School was about to let out, my birthday was coming up, and a summer of incredible goodness lay ahead of me.  Even now, I still get excited for all the kids as they embark on their summer of freedom and I share in their celebration as they bust out of the doors on that last day of school.

What is Two Wheels, Fast Feet?

Loving the Bike is excited to bring you Two Wheels, Fast Feet…..and it’s all about kids getting out there and having fun on bikes and on their feet this summer.  Okay parents, this is time where you grab that kid of yours and have them read along as you sit in front of your computer, android, or ipad.  Spend a little quality reading time together and introduce them to what Two Wheels, Fast Feet is all about.

There is a really cool book out there called “Einstein Never Used Flashcards”, and I once did a guest post over at Groucho Sports explaining what the book has to say about kids and sports. You can check out that full post right here if you like, but the basic premise is that:

“Despite societal brain washing that kids need exposure to a wide variety of activities to encourage their interests, the reality is that it’s okay to just play!”

Okay kids, if you’re parents haven’t already told you all about it….back in our day there wasn’t xbox, texting, or even the internet.  There also wasn’t the same sort of pressure put on us towards the sports we played either.  Once that last day of school came around, there was nothing but summer fun to be had.  And when I say fun, that meant a whole lot of time outside.

When I was a kid, I remember two types of physical activity: cruising on my bike, and running through town with my friends.  I lived on my bike.  It was my source of freedom, transportation, and endless amounts of fun times.  It really was one of my best friends.  When I wasn’t on my bike, I was running around playing games with my buddies.  I’m absolutely convinced that it was all this play time on and off the bike that made me the dude I am today.  Now that I’m the Dad of three super awesome kids, I’m making sure that they are encouraged to just get out there and play as well.

Let’s celebrate the fact that our kids are spending the summer out there like we did when we were kids….the way it is supposed to be.  If you’re on Twitter, be sure to use the #TwoWheelsFastFeet hashtag to tweet out all the great times your kids are having on their bikes and other fun activities.

The Contest:

So here is your mission, guys.  We want you to get out there and have the best summer ever using Two Wheels and Fast Feet….and we want to hear about it. Between now and August 1, we want you to let us know what you did to make it a Two Wheels, Fast Feet Summer.  Write us a poem, send in a video, sing us a song.  It’s your choice, but get something in to us and you’re in to win an exciting prize pack from our sponsors.  This includes products from Road ID, Pearl Izumi, and Ryders Sunglasses…..good stuff.

The finalists and winning entry will also be featured here at Loving the Bike.  Good luck, and get out there and have one rocking good summer.

Send in your entries to Darryl and be sure to include your age and hometown.

Enjoy Your Ride

Just to clarify…this is for things the kids make, right? Not things we make about the kids?

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
