This post was first published on October 9th 2012.  Due to race schedule issues this interview has not been recorded yet but I’m hoping to get it in the can within the next week. With that in mind, I’m taking the liberty of bumping this post back to the forefront of your minds and...

What To Do Now?

What To Do Now?

Following on from Darryl’s great ‘Do It Now’ post featured here yesterday, I wondered what things it would spark people into doing. This might not be as thought provoking as Darryl’s post or so centred in distant grey memories, but we’d like to help kick start some people into new challenges as the seasons...

Lola’s Journey

There comes a time in every cyclists life where stage racing seems the most beautiful and awe-inspiring way of making a living.  The scream of the crowd, the podium girls, the adrenalin and the mammoth, super-human efforts needed to achieve your goals mean that even whilst wearing very tight clothing and talking about shaven...

He Who Hesitates is a Damned Fool

I’d have to try really hard to find some sort of connection between the legendary actress, May West, and cycling….but because I love this quote of hers so much I’m going to do my best to make it happen.  (Oh, and I’ve decided to take off the “Make it Happen Monday” part off the...

#bikeschool: Le Tour 101

After last week’s Alternative Guide to the runners and riders of this year’s Tour I got lots of requests to continue the advice across a range of other Tour related areas. I will attempt to make the next two editions of the #bikeschool blog a little more factual than the last, however I cannot...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
