How Cycling Saved This Runner

I’ve always said that the bicycle can help solve all the world’s problems, and I stand by it.  As I wait for the bike to keep working its magic, it’s good to know that cycling helped save a triathlon friend of mine.  Anne Brennan is an Ironman athlete and a fellow blogger….and she’s here...

Wet & Wild: Winter Riding

December is definitely here and I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s bloomin’ cold over her in the good old U of K. When I checked out LovingTheBike.com yesterday morning (as I do every day, like a good ’employee’) I was filled with a sense of wonder tinged with a massive...

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

The Sufferfest: The Wretched Review

There comes a time in every cyclists’ season when the gluttony of an extra spoon of sugar in the coffee or a cheeky pain au chocolat or three over the winter catches up with them and something snaps. When that happens and the balance of treacle sponge versus training regime swings towards the more...

#bikeschool: Transitions

March 27, 2012
By

No, not those kind of transitions… But forgive me for using this picture of the ‘Mark Cavendish Shadow’, Tyler Farrar. It was not purely to make a cheap and frankly rubbish joke about the title of this post. It’s more about conveying how I’ve been feeling about my fitness and cycling recently and how...

#bikeschool: Because I can!

As many of you will remember I spent a week in July at Le Tour with @SteamyWynndows & @AndyMWild and as a result of that trip, ended up the proud owner of a limited edition Team Sky jersey signed by the riders. Since returning from the Tour I’ve been determined to make that Sky...

Snooze or RIDE

Snooze or RIDE – Guest post by Dave Boyd As I rolled out of my one successful track stop for the day and got back up to speed, a guy in his pressed white dress shirt (We’ll pretend it was pressed. I couldn’t really tell) driving a silver Toyota Avalon yelled out his passenger...

Winter’s Coming

If I was back in Canada right now, I would totally be fretting the arrival of Winter.  In fact, I would already be upset about the cool weather and lack of good riding conditions.  But fear not….I’m in Austin and all is good.  But if you are in the situation of the former, my...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
