Reckless Cycling

Reckless Cycling

I’m in no way trying to promote reckless cycling in any way, but I wanted to get a feel for how all of you label your riding.  Are you conservative, reckless, adventurous, scared?  What kind of adjective would you use for yourself? I sat down for a minute to think of what word first...

Berlin City Breaks by Bike

Berlin is the kind of city where you will find something surprising around every corner: from peaceful green spaces to important historical landmarks to cool-kid haunts. The best way to see the most that Berlin has to offer is by hiring out a bike and cycling around the city! As every seven in ten...

Loving the BITE: Sweet Potato Quinoa for Lunch, Carb Load, & Recovery

Sometimes my lunch is boring. As in same ol’ yawn-inducing boring. How ’bout yours? Other times, I have a stroke of genius and come up with a great meal that is nourishing, energizing, and exciting (as exciting as lunch can be, anyway). If you’re packing your lunch, you may go through these ups and downs...

Loving the Bike TV: Stay In Your Element

August 26, 2015
By

Okay, so I love being in my element in everything I do.  Sure, I may seem like I’m an extrovert….but it’s only when I’m in a situation where I feel totally at home and comfortable.  I’m all about my element and do all I can to stay right there in it as much as...

How Do You Define a Cyclist?

There are those of us who ride bikes, those who race, and those that commute by bicycle or use it for countless other reasons.  Some are on road bikes, some on BMX, fixie, mountain, urban, tandem, or one of the many other varieties.  However you slice it up, however you ride….you’re a cyclist, Right?...

What Has Being Impatient Done For Me?

What Has Being Impatient Done For Me?

I can honestly still remember the very first time I ever made a purchase in a store all by myself.  I was nervous, anxious, and shy.  Upon paying for the item, I quickly asked the lady checking me out if I could get a bag.  Her response stays with me to this day…..”Didn’t your...

Loving the BITE: Fish Tacos & Vitamin D for upcoming Winter Months

I just returned from my annual beach road-trip vacation. For the week I was on the beach, I had 3 main objectives: play lots with my kids including swimming, sand castling, and wave dunking, surf some waves on our family surf board, and find and eat the most delicious fish tacos southern California has...

Loving the Bike TV: What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?

August 19, 2015
By

A while back, we did a Cycling 360 podcast about what we would tell our younger self when just getting started with road cycling, and I thought it would be cool to come up with the same sort of advice for Loving Life off the Bike as well. In this edition of Loving the...

Time: Living vs Passing Time

Time: Living vs Passing Time

If finding the time were not an issue, we’d all ride 500 miles a week…right?  Unfortunately, most of us have to squeeze in our rides between work, family, and other commitments we have in our lives.  I am fortunate to get out for quite a few miles each week…..but it’s funny, the more I...

Buy Experiences Not Stuff

I don’t hide the fact that I find the “throwaway” culture of North America totally disgusting.  Yeah, we’re a society of buy all we can, and toss out anything that isn’t the latest and greatest. We’re consumed by stuff, and by having more of it.  You just have to look at the increasing number...

Loving the BITE: Powerhouse Hummus

C’mon, who can resist some tasty hummus?  It’s creamy, flavorful, and makes vegetables even better.  When I think about it, I actually don’t know many people who don’t like it.  It’s great for a snack, great added to a lunch sandwich, and great served as a sauce or dip in most dinner recipes.  Kabobs, anyone?  Just...

Loving the Bike TV: Captured by a Goat

August 12, 2015

It totally blows my mind to think that in less than 3 years our family has arrived in a foreign Caribbean country, opened a business, bought a farm, and lived out many of our biggest goals. My good buddy from the Goats on the Road lifestyle travel website captured some fun moments of my...

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
