Respect the Chain

June 30, 2014
By

The chain is arguably the most important part of any bike.  Tubes and tires can easily be patched or fixed while riding.  Broken spokes still allow you to get back home.  Busted cables might make things a little difficult, but you’re still able to ride.  But break or damage a chain while on the...

Shakedown Cruise: The Peugeot (Part 2)

The build was finally complete and all that was left was the shakedown cruise. I carried her down my front stairs and the fresh tires hit the pavement for the first time. Throwing my leg over, I immediately felt the difference in this bike compared to my others. Nothing bad. Just….different. I was wearing jeans, because...

Loving the BITE: Best Ever 10-Minute Fresh Salsa

I have a serious case of writer’s block.  Actually, I have a serious case of poison ivy from a recent trail run (which is why I should just stay on my bike).  I barely skirted the side of the trail to let an oncoming mountain biker get by.  It’s bad.  Not just a rash,...

Loving the Bike TV: Dress For Yourself

June 25, 2014
By

Forget about dressing for success….dress for yourself.  Image and clothing is something I’ve felt very strongly about for as long as I can remember, so I’m excited to share my viewpoint on this one with you. Anyone can dress themselves up, so I’ll never judge a person based on what they’re wearing.  In fact,...

My friend, Rob Greenfield amazes me in so many ways and I never get tired of the inspiration and motivation he provides me.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I see a person that’s doing fantastic things for their community or the world….I wonder if they’re really authentic.  Well, I’ve known Rob...

Will Immersive Fitness Revolutionize the Fitness Industry?

June 24, 2014
By

Group fitness and indoor cycling may not be my kind of thing, but I know there are a lot of people who move their bodies solely because this option is available to them. But watch out, the indoor fitness class industry is about to get rocked with Immersive Fitness. I’m not sure if I’ve...

Leaving on a Jet Plane

Bonjour mes amis! I’m…if the blog scheduling is working correctly…now in France! Land of wine, cheese, chocolate and bicycles. It figures I’m in France during the wrong month. Someday I’ll get to see le Tour in person, but it’s not to be on this trip. One of the hardest things for me to deal with...

Strava Attack

Nothing can motivate a cyclist like a little friendly competition, and Strava definitely provides the framework to create challenges.  Although I’ve had a Strava account since they first started up, I wouldn’t consider myself a Stravaholic like several cyclists around the world.  But the other night I fell asleep thinking about a few of...

A Labor of Love: The Peugeot (Part 1)

It was January, 2012, when I found this frame and fork at the Madison Bike Swap. And what a bargain it was: $10 for the frame; another $3 for the fork. She was pretty dirty and there were a few marks on the frame, but I could see past that. She had good bones....

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
