An Open Letter to All Cycling Dads

As we head into Father’s Day weekend, I wanted to shout out with an open letter to all my Cycling Dad counterparts out there.  This is our weekend, and I want you to get out there and celebrate your victories on the bike and those that you have at home with your family.

Being a Dad has got to be the most rewarding and incredible experience in the world.  But to be good at it, a lot of quality time and energy needs to be given out in order to maintain your title of Worlds Greatest Dad.  Mix in the fact that your passion just happens to be a sport that requires a lot of time, energy…and money and it makes things even more of an adventure.

This Father’s Day, a tip of the cycling hat goes out to each of you Cycling Dads out there.  As you continue as the master juggler….balancing Family, Career, Chores, and Cycling time……your excellent work and commitment is not going un-noticed.  Keep your head up and celebrate in the fact that you’re a true champion, a leader, and one incredible role model for your kids.

If you are a Cycling Dad, you are committed to the bike and all the goodness it has to offer your body and soul.  That alone is one incredible example you are setting for your family.  You are showing your kids the importance of exercise, dedication, and pushing your body to be better and stronger.  Well done.  Being an active Dad also gives you the health and longevity to help make sure you stick around for a while as well.

Here’s to all of us Cycling Dads.  Get out there and have the best Father’s Day Weekend ever.  Rock On.

Enjoy Your Ride

Just saw this post as I was looking around.  I think the Cycling Dad is a great topic to the point that I have just begun my own blog dedicated to this.  http://www.cyclistdad.com if you are interested.

Happy New Year and happy riding.

A cycling dad is a great dad. My pap is a cyclist and we understand his busy schedule in training for cycling. During his free time he  make sure that he spends a quality time with us. We never experience the feeling of not having a dad despite his busy schedule. Last fathers day, we joined him in his training for cycling in order to make him feel that we will support him all the way…

Coming from you Darryl, frankly one of the best dads I have ever met. This is pretty cool.
For me I had to watch my little girl walk down the high school graduation isle this month and know that I never truly would have here live with me again was harder than I ever imagined. As much as I can be selfish like anyone else I am grateful for all the hours I had with her. And I can promise you , I have many wonderful memories of her childhood, but I really don’t remember any of those extra hours I spent making the ride a little longer.
Now, DONT get me wrong, there has to be balance in life, and you cannot truly deliver love and warmth and happiness to your children unless you feel good about yourself and are fulfilled and happy internally. You HAVE to devote time to your self to be able to devote GOOD time to anyone else. Finding that balance is the magic.
    Just don’t blink.

Great comments, Eric.  I haven’t seen you around your kids yet…but when I see how fun and committed you and Pamela are, I can only imagine how great you are with them as well.

Nice post, Darryl.  Happy Father’s Day to you!  I’m planning on riding some with the kids and also getting some solo riding, and I think I may be getting some cycling accessories from the wife & kids.  My kids were actually the motivating factor behind me starting to ride again, and cycling has provided some great quality time for us.

    Best,
    Rob

Sugar Alternatives for Energy and Hydration

Question: I am using the homebrew sugar formulations (sometimes added to green tea).  I am also trying to wean myself off 1/2 dose adrenalean “lip tonic delivery system” (biorhythm brand- caffeine, hoodia g, synephrine, yohimbe) capsule for energy.

My question is other than juice, can you suggest modifications in lieu of table sugar for energy and hydration.

Answer:

Both raw/organic honey or agave can work great in the homebrew (substitute in the same quantities for the sugar, or to taste), but you do have to shake well in order to make sure they don’t settle out.  Have you tried either of these?  Also, make sure to use at least the minimum amount of salt recommended in the homebrew as the temps rise, you need the sodium replacement if you’re sweating.
